Skylarks

Skylarks’ gives you a great insight into lives that you never normally think about, with the story creating a picture in your mind.

The story follows Joni a young girl whose trying to hold her family together, with money being tight and her unable to work, everything seems thrown at the family all at once. Joni tries to help her family out by working at the library where she meets Annabel. Annabel is the complete opposite to Joni, yet there’s an unexplainable electricity when there together. However so many obstacles come Joni’s way that she doesn’t know who to trust and is losing faith in everything. When Annabel’s parents find out they clearly believe that some differences are impossible to overcome.

The story was interesting as it incorporated two different walks of life and also explores sexuality. It made me realise how much of my own family life I take for granted and how having a lot of money does not make your life perfect. I love how much Joni cares about her little brother, and how hard she worked to make everything seem okay.  The relationship with Joni and Annabel is intriguing as it’s often not explored and I really enjoyed the story. I’d definitely recommend this book as it created a really strong picture in my mind!

a gripping and heart-warming story and I’d really recommend it to anyone my age.

Despite the fact that it’s not a typical book I would read, I really enjoyed this novel. It was a gripping and heart-warming story and I’d really recommend it to anyone my age.

Emily Price, age 15

This story was equally beautiful and engaging, I really enjoyed it.

This book explores some of the important issues that young adults face today. There is both an LGBT love story and the story of a modern, working class family, which creates balance. Therefore, I would highly recommend this book as I believe that it has something for everyone. The novel also questions and often criticises the current inequalities within society, and calls for justice.

Definitely will read again.

Slow start but worth the read. Good book. Difficult to get into but worth it once you do.

Katie, age 16

I would recommend this book to anyone looking for an honest novel that deals with real issues.

Annabel and Jodi are from different worlds entirely. Jodi comes from a loving family that has money problems. Annabel comes from a wealthy family who prize success above showing love in their family. When the two meet it’s clear that they are as different as night and day, but there’s something between them that just might overcome their differences.

'Skylarks' is a heartfelt story that tackles the issues of differences and relationships. It deals with issues such as being gay and poverty, in a way that isn’t exaggerated or forced. The characters are honest and believable portrayals of people in their situation.

Wow, this was so brilliantly amazing!! It made me laugh and cry. Wonderfully done. Read this book.

Joni used to dream that one day she could fly just like a bird but these days she knows that her feet are planted on the ground because money’s tight, her Dad cannot work and they all need to work together. Then after everything she meets Annabel. Annabel is the opposite of Joni and yet the magic’s in the air. Is she falling in love?? When the parents find out what will they have to say??
