All relationships have their ups and downs, whether it’s struggles with a partner or difficulties in the family. Our Relationship Stories section shows the unique features of relationships in gloriously written technicolour.
Absorbing, romantic and very well written, this is the second novel chronicling the stories of two families, in the seaside town of Kingshaven, whose lives have become intertwined. This novel moves on to 1969 and follows the lives of two of the women over the next two decades. Now we just have to wait for the third part of this lovely trilogy.
Trying to juggle work, the loss of her cleaner and her mother moving in after a fall, Alex decides to take up her friend’s suggestion that she needs a “wife” to take care of everything at home. However, what seems like the perfect solution just might turn out to be a complete nightmare with divorce on the cards very soon. Once again Annie Sanders brings us fun and warm characters to sympathise, empathise and generally amuse ourselves with.
A delicious tale of love, mud, money and mayhem; her best yet in my opinion. This author has a wonderful knack of gently ridiculing the middle-classes and the rich, of turning ordinary situations into escapades of total madness and of developing wonderfully eccentric characters. She really is the most tremendous fun. Comparison: Victoria Clayton, Plum Sykes, Lou Wakefield.
My Best Friend’s Girl was a Richard and Judy Book Club title, this is in similar vein, a challenging subject about surrogacy, love and true friendship, beautifully handled, moving and powerful. Comparison: Jane Fallon, Jacquelyn Mitchard, Elizabeth Berg.
Oh the luxury of a life funded by a super rich Uncle. Oh the ignominy of his new wife chocking off the funds. Louise Bagshawe is in her literary 'sweet spot' with this glamorous block-buster following the ups and downs (in all senses of the word) of the four Chambers cousins...
In the horseshoe bay of Kalami in Corfu, a love affair begins between a novelist and a woman escaping scandal. Years later, her daughter Melissa, running from her own past, returns to the island. Melissa's life in England is in disarray.
This book has some of the funniest dialogue and wackiest characters we have come across in a long time. The Spellman’s are a dysfunctional family firm of private investigators who sadly can’t leave the tools of the trade outside the family home. This clearly makes for strained family relationships, when your mother runs a social security check on all your boyfriends, and totally destroys personal relationships when you know what your boyfriend is spending on his credit card before he gets the bill! The book is just brilliant and you have to read it!
An excellent choice for a fun, madcap summer read. Holly is constantly wishing he life was like that of an old fashioned Hollywood movie star and it isn’t far off that until one day when everything in her life suddenly goes wrong. Funny and witty this is a real page turner to get you giggling and maybe realising life isn’t so bad just the way it is.
Lucy Diamond is definitely one to watch. This is her second novel and is as witty and observant as her previous novel, Any Way You Want Me. When Josie and two of her oldest friends meet up for a weekend reunion all is going so well until a chance discovery by Josie puts in motion a set of events which will turn her life upside down. The dialogue is fast paced and funny and makes this a real page turner, with great characters you genuinely care about. Look our for more from this author.
A great, laugh out loud, romantic comedy. Alice is a PA at a music company who is offered the opportunity of a lifetime to go and work in America from the New York office. What this actually means is she is sent to Ohio to persuade a recovering alcoholic musician, Wyatt Brown, to record the album he owes the company. Alice finds herself plunged in to the cosy country life of Barnsley, Ohio, after a blizzard traps her there, with a quirky collection of characters who all take a keen interest in the new English arrival. Even the hostile Wyatt starts to warm to her and soon England and her boyfriend Stephen seem a long way away. A fun and feel-good novel.
Featured on The Book Show on Sky Arts on 22 January 2009. A presenter on GMTV news, the author uses her inside knowledge to great effect in this astute, romantic tale of the pitfalls of the industry.
I absolutely loved this. A story of two women whose lives become connected after the younger one, Helen, decides that Liz is her half sister, abandoned by Helens mother some thirty years before and sets out to reunite the family. What Barr manages so well is to create a constant ominous undertone throughout the novel while still telling a tale with humour and warmth. This is funny and bittersweet and thoroughly absorbing. Highly recommended.
