All relationships have their ups and downs, whether it’s struggles with a partner or difficulties in the family. Our Relationship Stories section shows the unique features of relationships in gloriously written technicolour.
A charming and intelligent comedy. We follow the two sides to Arabella’s life, her teaching a creative writing class, which is made up of quite an eclectic bunch and the relationship she has with her dying mother who she visits in a nursing home. Thoroughly enjoyable and touching.
Before Bernie Madoff and his pyramid scheme brought the wealthiest in the world to their knees, there was another scandal with Lloyds of London, it’s ‘Names’, and the asbestos reinsurance crisis that would ruin many. It’s not, perhaps, the most obvious choice for a novel but it gives Vincenzi the opportunity to indulge in a great deal of gloriously unpleasant members of the 80s upper class and nouveau riche. Not vintage Vincenzi but still an enjoyable romp.
Unashamedly romantic stuff. Becca is setting up men with the brides of their dreams, all in the most discreet and subtle manner of course, then suddenly finds herself with a female client, Sam, who wants Becca to find a groom for her. Fed up with the dating scene herself, Becca agrees but soon finds maybe she is not so fed up with men as she thought. Romantic and funny, treat yourself.Comparison: Chris Manby, Kate Harrison, Sophie Kinsella.
Rachel Covington is rather full of herself and rather selfish but you can’t help liking her or this novel. It’s funny and fresh and a brilliant book for a holiday read. This is the authors first novel and lets hope there will be more to come.Comparison: Marian Keyes, Sophie Kinsella, Catherine Alliott.
A mid-life crisis tale of great charm. Chloe has been married to Greg for 17 years and although she still loves him, she aches for some bedroom activity. Temptation enters in the guise of Ivan, a passionate Russian, and romance ensues … Full of shrewd observations about how women feel when a marriage has lost its way and gone a little stale, it should be read by men as well, just to learn a thing or two! It won the Good Housekeeping Award for Most Entertaining Read. Comparison: Claire Calman, Carole Matthews, Alexandra Potter.
Appeared on “Hay-on-Sky” 24 May. Once one of our most respected authors but her work has tailed off over the last few years. Well now she is back on form with a group of high-powered women discussing their lives while soaking up the luxury in an expensive health spa. Lots of time to talk and share secrets.Comparison: Beryl Bainbridge, Wendy Perriam, Emma Tennant.
March 2009 Debut of the Month. Shortlisted for the World Book Day 2009 Book to Talk About. If you have ever taken the plunge in to internet dating there is so much that will make you laugh in this book and also be quite re-assuring that the same experiences are had by all. Nasreen is looking for love but also someone who shares her culture and faith. Honest and funny this is a great read and highly recommended.
The second in a delicious series where this astute author combines female friendship with clever plots and lots of good advice, dished up with warmth and humour. She is a star.Comparison: Marian Keyes, Isla Dewar, Melissa Bank.
Flirty, razor sharp wit blended with lots of passion and inter-flatmate rivalry make a delicious cocktail of a read. Ugly duckling Alex decides to not let herself be the bottom of the heap and beat her three flatmates in the games they play with men.
Another great read from Debbie Macomber. A group of women get together every Wednesday to chat about what’s going on in their lives and soon they find they are all united in unburdening their various stresses and problems. A great story about friendships and life’s ups and downs.
Written in alternating chapters, a mother and teenage daughter go through the anxiety and fear of anorexia while being helped by an interesting therapist. It is a very poignant portrait of the illness, of a mother-daughter relationship and a life’s journey. The author has written several books on parenting and brings her understanding and compassion to this sensitive novel.Comparison: Kate Long, Susan Fletcher, Clare Chambers.
Longlisted for the Orange Prize 2007.This is a delightful, quirky read. You will be hooked on the main character, Ramble, from the start and be very sorry to say goodbye to her by the end of the book. This is the author's first novel and we hope there will be many more to come.
