A darkly quirky and action packed fantasy adventure that proclaims it’s not only ok to be different, it can at times, actually be an advantage. 15 year old Napoleon, also known as Zam, lives in Newcastle, he has a walking disability, he’s best friends with a polecat called Rat and a girl called Ezzy, and he lives with his inventor grandfather Eli. When the dangerously frightening wyte Ackx threatens his whole existence, Zam travels beneath his city and finds a world he knew nothing about. It took a little while to get used to the style and creatures of this underworld, once I’d settled in, I rather enjoyed the chills and terrors that awaited. Zam is a boy of grit and determination, and his heart is full of love for his friends and family. Frank Lambert has created a new champion, and he's someone I’d want by my side if I ever ventured into the intimidating and creepy underworld that can be found inside ‘Napoleon Xylophone’.

Love him or loathe him, 'Iron' Mike Tyson is an icon and one of the most fascinating sporting figures of our time. November 2013 Book of the Month. “Call me asap – 187” says the text, 187 being the California penal code for murder. Lawyer Mickey Haller sees money and knows he will have to work at his highest level. It turns out the victim was a prostitute he had defended on several occasions, and she had a number of contacts who could have killed her. Sancti Trilogy book 3, a wonderful series of books set in an imagined city which can be visited with total enjoyment even if you haven’t read the first two … but you will, once you’ve read this. Those in the know have to cope with sadness of this series finishing. As with Dan Brown, you have history, science and the occult mixed together. Just enjoy.
December 2013 Debut of the Month. Shortlisted for the CWA John Creasey (New Blood) Dagger - Best First Novel 2014. A very simple story with no surprises (until the end) but told with such perceptive insight into the characters and so beautifully written it grips the imagination. It’s about a long-term partnership shattered by a young woman tempting the ‘husband’ Todd away. ‘Wife’ Jodie now has no financial or proprietary rights and things start to get ugly. This could have been banal, like a 60’s American crime TV show but no, this slowly unfolding tragedy becomes a deeply disturbing tale leaving you quite wrung-out. An excellent read.
Followers of the series have a treat in store with this gorgeous Christmas offering. Newcomers can join here and giggle, background knowledge is useful but not essential. Angela is now married to Alex so we don’t have the will she/won’t she element. However … what is the next obvious happy-ever-after step? Children. Angela doesn’t feel ready, yet friends around her are. This is about growing up and facing responsibilities but still handled in a crazy, humorous way. It is a lovely series.
