The Kills

The Kills

Author: Richard House Format: Paperback Release Date: 08/05/2014

Longlisted for the Man Booker Prize 2013. Shortlisted for the South Bank Sky Arts Awards 2014. Camp Liberty is a forgotten military base in Amrah province, Iraq, a place where the detritus of war is incinerated, burried, erased from memory. It is manned only by a small group of economic mercenaries. When the mysterious Stephen Lawrence Sutler arrives tension begins to mount. And then everything changes. An explosion. An attack on a regional government office. When the dust settles it emerges that Sutler has disappeared, and over fifty million dollars of reconstruction funds are missing. This is neither the beginning nor the end of the trouble. And there's the vicious murder of an American student in Italy. A murder that replicates exactly the details of a well-known novel, a novel Sutler has read. Moving across continents, characters and genres, The Kills is an epic tale of crime and conspiracy: ambitious, original and gripping. 'Prepare to be dazzled by this monumental novel' Sunday Times

Noble Endeavours The Life of Two Countries, England and Germany, in Many Stories

Noble Endeavours The Life of Two Countries, England and Germany, in Many Stories

Author: Miranda Seymour Format: Paperback Release Date: 08/05/2014

On the eve of marking the centenary of the opening of the hostilities that devastated the world and changed its history, old wounds gape rawly open. No two countries in Europe possess a stronger history of cultural and familial sympathy, trust and mutual respect than Britain and Germany. This book sets out the diverse stories of some of the people who contributed to the building of a house of shared dreams and aspirations, of mutual enlightenment and fruitful exchange. These are the stories of emperors, kings and queens, of travellers, writers, artists, students and political exiles; of ambassadors, reformers and the families so closely woven into the fabric of both countries that, when war came, divided loyalties ripped them apart. All these people have played their part. All, in their different ways, are remarkable; all deserve to be called noble for what they set out to achieve. All - glimpsed here only at the point where they contribute to the story of England and Germany - have earned their place in a history of the love and mutual admiration that two nations once shared - and that they deserve to share again.

The Perilous Question The Drama of the Great Reform Bill 1832

The Perilous Question The Drama of the Great Reform Bill 1832

Author: Antonia Fraser Format: Paperback Release Date: 08/05/2014

For our inconclusive times, there is an attractive resonance with 1832, with its 'rotten boroughs' of Old Sarum and the disappearing village of Dunwich, and its lines of most resistance to reform. This book is character-driven - on the one hand, the reforming heroes are the Whig aristocrats Lord Grey, Lord Althorp and Lord John Russell, and the Irish orator Daniel O'Connell. They included members of the richest and most landed Cabinet in history, yet they were determined to bring liberty, which whittled away their own power, to the country. The all-too-conservative opposition comprised Lord Londonderry, the Duke of Wellington, the intransigent Duchess of Kent and the consort of the Tory King William IV, Queen Adelaide. Finally, there were 'revolutionaries' and reformers, like William Cobbett, the author of RURAL RIDES. This is a book that features one eventful year, much of it violent. There were riots in Bristol, Manchester and Nottingham, and wider themes of Irish and 'negro emancipation' underscore the narrative. The time-span of the book is from Wellington's intractable declaration in November 1830 that 'The beginning of reform is the beginning of revolution', to 7th June 1832, the date of the extremely reluctant royal assent by William IV to the Great Reform Bill, under the double threat of the creation of 60 new peers in the House of Lords and the threat of revolution throughout the country. These events led to a total change in the way Britain was governed, a two-year revolution that Antonia Fraser brings to vivid dramatic life.

The Secret Ministry of Ag. & Fish My Life in Churchill's Secret Army

The Secret Ministry of Ag. & Fish My Life in Churchill's Secret Army

Author: Noreen Riols Format: Paperback Release Date: 08/05/2014

'My mother thought I was working for the Ministry of Ag. and Fish.' So begins Noreen Riols' compelling memoir of her time as a member of Churchill's 'secret army', the Special Operations Executive. It was 1943, just before her eighteenth birthday, Noreen received her call-up papers, and was faced with either working in a munitions factory or joining the Wrens. A typically fashion-conscious young woman, even in wartime, Noreen opted for the Wrens - they had better hats. But when one of her interviewers realized she spoke fluent French, she was directed to a government building on Baker Street. It was SOE headquarters, where she was immediately recruited into F-Section, led by Colonel Maurice Buckmaster. From then until the end of the war, Noreen worked with Buckmaster and her fellow operatives to support the French Resistance fighting for the Allied cause. Sworn to secrecy, Noreen told no one that she spent her days meeting agents returning from behind enemy lines, acting as a decoy, passing on messages in tea rooms and picking up codes in crossword puzzles. Vivid, witty, insightful and often moving, this is the story of one young woman's secret war, offering readers an authentic and compelling insight into what really went on in Churchill's 'secret army' from one of its last surviving members.
