Why Unabridged?

At Lovereading we love books - the language, the stories, and the detail - that’s why we read. Audiobooks give us an opportunity to enjoy literature in a whole new range of situations whether it's in the car or while doing other things. But we don’t read shortened books to save a small amount of money so why do more people read abridged audiobooks than unabridged? It's time to change that and if you can help us to spread the word we can.

Many people just don't realise they're listening to an abridged audiobook.  Abridged audiobooks look the same from the outside, with the word abridged only appearing in tiny letters somewhere on the cover, but open it up and the content has been slashed just to reduce the cost of the recording a little. You’ll be amazed to find out just how heavily abridged audio books are, with most having 50-70% of the content of the book removed – 85% in the case of One Day by David Nicholls.

Other best sellers are the same; you only get 37% of Dan Brown's Lost Symbol if you listen to the abridged version and only 29% of the Man Booker winner Wolf Hall!

That’s why we’ve teamed up exclusively with leading unabridged audiobook publisher Whole Story where they also believe that listeners should enjoy every nuance, every plot line, every character and every description, just as the author intended.

Why Whole Story Audio Books?

We’ve chosen Whole Story Audio Books as our partner for our 2010 Love Listening Campaign because they are as passionate about unabridged audio as we are about reading! With over 1,500 titles on their website, all published and lovingly produced exclusively by Whole Story Audio Books, their listings are chock full of bestsellers, award winners, top authors and critically acclaimed titles across a wide range of genres. And because they are producing 15 new titles a month and their backlist is littered with gems, there is always something new and interesting coming through.
