Stories from the heart. This category combines Romantic Fiction with Sagas and Romance to create a collection of lovely tales. From rags to riches stories to tales of tight-knit communities, this carefully curated collection is bound to have the perfect match for you, and as the Beatles said, ‘love is all you need’.
The perfect pick-me-up, this book delivers plenty of romance, smiles, and most importantly enfolds you in a lovely satisfying storyline too. Minnie would rather spend her birthday on New Years Day hiding under her duvet, as far as she’s concerned the last and first day of the year is jinxed. Then she meets Quinn who shares her birthday but otherwise appears to waltz through life, and the attraction is undeniable. Sophie Cousens has the most lovely refreshing style, a lightness of touch and sparkling wit walks hand in hand with considerate contemplation and emotion. Travelling back to the past ensured we saw what had affected, shaped and changed these two characters. I loved the ping-pong of little morsels of information, popping up to build a picture that we had access to, but Abbie and Quinn remained unaware of. Missed chances is the main theme here, but there is so much more on offer too, with access to Quinn ensuring this wasn’t just a one way Minnie street. The supporting characters are a lively bunch, with a mixture of personalities and issues keeping things interesting. Romantic, yes most definitely, This Time Next Year is also an amusing, thoughtful, and friendly read too.
We are not going any further until you tell me why yet another fiance seems intent on wringing your neck. Georgiana da Silva is catapulted out of the Victorian drawing rooms and into a world of danger when she escapes her fiendish fiance to engage in a mad dash across the world to save her brother before an unknown assassin can find him. Meanwhile, Captain Harry Trent is setting sail for New Zealand. With a mission to complete and the law on his heels, he's got enough trouble of his own without further complications. Thrown together, unable to trust anyone, Georgiana and Harry are intent on fulfilling their missions despite the distractions of the other. But liberty comes at a price and the closer they get, the more they must question the true cost of being free.
Love - is it worth its weight in gold? It's 1866 and the gold rush is on. Left to fend for herself in the wilds of New Zealand's west coast, Lady Guinevere Stanhope is determined to do whatever it takes to rescue her ancestral home and restore her father's good name. Forced out of his native Ireland, Quinn O'Donnell dreams of striking gold. His fiercely held prejudices make him loath to help any English person, let alone a lady as haughty and obstinate as Guinevere. But when a flash flood hits, Quinn is compelled to rescue her, and their paths become entwined in this uncharted new world. Though a most inconvenient attraction forms between them, both remain determined to pursue their dreams, whatever the cost. Will they realise in time that all that glitters is not gold? Demelza's efforts to adapt to the ways of the gentry - and her husband - bring her confusion and heartache, despite her joy in the birth of their first child. Ross begins a bitter struggle for the rights of the mining communities - and sows the seed of an enduring enmity with powerful George Warleggan. 'From the incomparable Winston Graham ...who has everything that anyone else has, then a whole lot more' Guardian
This is such a lovely tale, it has the feel of a perfect summer afternoon, with just the occasional threat of storm clouds. Nell finds herself on her honeymoon without a husband, after he left her devastated, at the altar. With an absolutely fabulous set of new friends, neighbours, colleagues, and of course a rather dishy man waiting for her, can she put her heartbreak behind her? I smiled, smirked, laughed, and ahh’d my way through this book. Wendy Holden creates wonderfully nosy trouble makers, and shocking revenge seekers, who attempt to create mayhem, and add a slice of shenanigans to proceedings. Fresh, flirty and fun, ‘Honeymoon Suite’ is a gloriously charming tale, gentle yet feisty, and a perfect escape of a read. ~ Liz Robinson
A gorgeously evocative tale, ‘Vermilion Skies’ may be classed as a love story, however there is far more on offer here. Set mainly in Chile, where the scenery and society paint a vivid scene, 14 year old Milana has an understanding of humanity far beyond her years. As Milana struggles with tragedy and to find life beyond the shanty town where she lives, she explores life and love. Wendela Lumley writes with a beautiful empathy and tenderness yet she doesn't shy away from reality. The fragility and harshness of life provokes and prods at your awareness, while in the next moment, joy in the beauty that can be found in the smallest thing, shines through the pages. Travelling across years, searching for truth and understanding, this is an engaging and captivating love story. ~ Liz Robinson

May 2011 Book of the Month. The sparkling follow-up to A Weekend with Mr Darcy from Victoria Connelly who is set to become the Richard Curtis of the chick-lit world! It's very much for Jane Austen enthusiasts. This second one is about filming Persuasion in Lyme Regis. Featuring a cast of characters that could have stepped out of a Jane Austen novel, this is the perfect read for fans of Katie Fforde and Alexandra Potter. Perfect Summer reading from an hilariously funny Chick Lit Author.
September 2010 Book of the Month. You don’t have to be an Austen fan to love this. It’s set around a Jane Austen conference that dedicated fans flock to but it’s really a tale of a woman in love with an historical novelist’s work and being badly let down. It’s true romantic fiction in all its guises with some lovely characters and a fun Austen setting. Apparently it’s the beginning of a trilogy, all set in Austen locations. Comparison: Katie Fforde, Alexandra Potter, Lucy Dillon.
Beautiful, rich, famous -- and seriously stressed, actress Connie Gordon is ready for a change. Deciding to accept an invitation from her fan club in Scotland, Connie kisses goodbye to her ex-boyfriends, stalkers and double-crossing agents, and prepares herself for complete relaxation. But swapping the Hollywood Hills for the Highlands of Scotland doesn't make for the easiest of transitions and, when she meets local playwright, Alastair McInnes, who's sworn he'll never become involved with another actress again, sparks fly, and the sleepy village of Lochnabrae will never be the same again.
November 2017 Book of the Month A sharp, edgy, yet lovely romance for young adults. Hildy and Paul are paired in a college psychology study about relationships. They are asked 36 questions over the course of the story, and through their answers begin to learn about each other and themselves. As the sparks began to smoulder and then fly we discover heart-ache and strength in unexpected places. Vicki Grant uses various methods to tell the story, including drawings, texts and instant messages. This form of communication ensures the story is quick witted and bounces like a tennis match between Hildy and Paul. The other characters, including a certain fish remain in the background, yet set the scene and give flesh to the main pair. ’36 Questions That Changed My Mind About You’ is an extremely readable and satisfying romance full of spark and attitude. ~ Liz Robinson
It is a Quick Read but has the same setting as her big seller The Beach Hut and those fans will undoubtedly lap it up despite its size and simplicity. I think it will do very well indeed. It is also perfect to pass on to anyone who might not be such a committed reader to tempt them into reading longer books.
We all love a good saga. From Wuthering Heights and Jamaica Inn, to the modern works of authors like Katie Flynn, Katherine Webb and Nadine Dorries, there is something so captivating about the journey of a romantic heroine through an unfamiliar world, where the hearts and desires of all around her form the centre of everything. These stories can take place on grand settings: on the High Seas and foreign lands, or on a small cobbled street in a northern mining town. It doesn’t matter, as the journey of the heart is the most important of all. Get your tissues at the ready and find yourself happily shipwrecked on the ragged rocks of epic romance.
