Welcome to Maxim Jakubowski's world of books...

_________________________

By total coincidence, and the vagaries of publishing programmes, three of this month's selected books partly take place during World War 2 and in the shadow of the concentration camps. A reminder that crime and thriller (and one more specifically literary) books can embrace difficult subjects, and integrate daring themes into their fabric. Similarly several of our other choices feature female characters who are more than flawed and are actually cold-blooded killers; add supernatural evil incarnate, some jolly kidnappers, a damaged heroine (albeit not a criminal) and a pedophiliac teacher alongside his equally twisted pupils, and you have something of a rough month. Are we not entertained?
