Author of the Month - Malorie Blackman Author of the Month - Malorie Blackman

Although Malorie Blackman is best known by teenagers and young adults for her Noughts and Crosses sequence which was first published well over 15 years ago, the sequence of 4 novels remains truly compelling, original and relevant to today dealing brilliantly with issues of race and ethnic identity and with fabulous new covers this sequence is a must read if you have yet to discover it whether you are an adult or a teenager. And, in her latest novel Chasing the Stars, Malorie Blackman has entwined two of her great passions - Shakespeare's Othello and science fiction - to create a thrilling outer-space-set epic that tingles with romance, danger, distrust and jealousy.

Noughts & Crosses "...one of those games that nobody ever plays after childhood, because nobody ever wins..." Malorie Blackman

Malorie Blackman - Author of the Month

Noughts and Crosses, first published in 2001, explores racism through a fictional dystopia where the dark-skinned ruling class of the Crosses look down upon the white Noughts. Through the characters of Sephy and Callum, and their doomed love affair, the author addressed issues of racial prejudice in a ground-breaking way. The story continued with the sequels Knife Edge, Double Cross and finished with Checkmate.

All four books in the series have now been reissued, with stunning new covers. Malorie Blackman - Noughts and Crosses

Michael Rosen on Noughts & Crosses : "A book that dared to go where no one thought you could with young audiences because it raises tough stuff to do with race."

Noughts & Crosses was selected by a distinguished independent panel of experts including our editorial expert, Julia Eccleshare, for Diverse Voices - 50 of the best Children's Books celebrating cultural diversity in the UK.
