Lovereading view...

The final book in the ‘Project Trilogy’ and it’s an absolute belter as the story surges to a fittingly dramatic conclusion. In the present day Maria finds herself back at the Project facility, and feels as though she is home. Piercing the present are flashback views to the time immediately prior to her re-initiation, just as you settle into one time frame, you are thrown again, deliberately making you suspect, and question everything in front of you. If you haven't yet met Dr Maria Martinez, do start with Subject 375 and The Killing Files, as to truly appreciate Maria you need to have an understanding of the first two books. Maria speaks in the first person, and due to her Asperger syndrome, I found myself viewing everything differently as my mind evaluated and raced to keep up with hers. Nikki Owen has created a sharp and fast moving storyline, where momentary bubbles of amusement create a welcome diversion in this deeply intense world. ‘The Girl Who Ran’ is a surprisingly intimate and thought-provoking read, in a fascinating, thrilling setting, and when I reached the end I sat back with a contented sigh.

June 2017 eBook of the Month.

Synopsis

The Girl Who Ran by Nikki Owen

Running from the enemy...Dr Maria Martinez has finally escaped The Project facility that has been controlling her since birth. But in going against The Project's rigid protocol, the powers at the very top of the organisation will go to any length to re-initiate her. Their aim? To bring her back to the tightly-regimented headquarters where their intense 'training 'of Maria can be completed. Fleeing to Switzerland in an attempt to outwit her enemy, Maria must never lose sight of potential danger, but soon finds there's nowhere to run. And as she starts to question whether she can trust even those closest to her, returning to the one place she has fought so hard to leave might be her only option. An electrifying thriller, perfect for fans of Nicci French and Charles Cumming.
