Published ahead of Kate Riordan’s new novel The Shadow Hour, this evocative short story featuring characters from her debut The Girl in the Photograph is set in the 1930’s and features an exclusive extract from ‘The Shadow Hour’. Marjorie could have had a very different life, however she married James and has had to put up with his affairs and barbed comments from her sister about the type of man he is. It is a journey of discovery, of endless possibilities and it captured my attention from the first few lines. Kate Riordan has a quietly expressive way with words, the story flows beautifully, yet with purpose. She has the ability to highlight the small things, the things that actually really matter, yet sit in the background, almost hidden. ‘The Red Letter’ is a sharply poignant, entirely captivating and moving tale. ~ Liz Robinson

Synopsis

Red Letter by Kate Riordan

Secrets and lies in the 1930s in an atmospheric short story from the bestselling author of The Girl in the Photograph. Marjorie knows that James has had affairs in the past but she believed him when he said it would never happen again. Then the old warning signs start to reappear. He stays late at work and seems distracted when he's at home. That doesn't stop her breath catching in her throat when she sees the letter inked into his diary. A red A - seemingly innocuous and yet devastating. Undeniable. She was a clever, independent and desirable woman once. Not someone's second best with a broken spirit. And as Marjorie looks at the red letter A - Amy? Angela? - she realises that it's time to rediscover herself and take back control of her life.
