Magnificent Masters

Magnificent Masters

Author: Gil Capps Format: eBook Release Date: 25/03/2014

Long before any of the players actually hit a golf ball, the 1975 Masters Tournament was destined for the record books when Lee Elder became the first African-American ever invited to the exclusive Augusta clubs tourney. He was among the veritable Hall of Fame-list of competitors that week: Arnold Palmer, Tom Watson, Gary Player, Lee Trevino, Hale Irwin, Billy Casper, and Sam Snead. But Elder, rattled by the media attention, missed the cut. By the weekend, this would be overshadowed, however, by a showdown of the games three heavyweights: Jack Nicklaus, Johnny Miller, and Tom Weiskopf. Their back-and-forth battle would rivet the golfing world and dramatically culminate in one of the greatest finishes in Masters' history.Gil Capps, a twenty-two-year veteran of the golf industry with NBC Sports and the Golf Channel, recaptures, hole-by-hole, the thrilling drama of this singular event from golfs golden era, from the media-crazed build-up to the tournament's final dramatic putt that would change the game of golf forever.

The Asian Games: Modern Metaphor for `The Middle Kingdom' Reborn Political Statement, Cultural Assertion, Social Symbol

The Asian Games: Modern Metaphor for `The Middle Kingdom' Reborn Political Statement, Cultural Assertion, Social Symbol

Author: J. A. Mangan Format: Hardback Release Date: 26/02/2014

The premise of The Asian Games: Modern Metaphor for `The Middle Kingdom' Reborn - Political Statement, Cultural Assertion, Social Symbol is emphatic. The Guangzhou 2010 Asian Games was a metaphor for hegemony and renaissance. China crushed the other Asian nations with the massive weight of its Gold Medal `haul' and demonstrated regional self-confidence regained. The huge accumulation of gold medals emphasized that once again China stood apart, and above, other nations of Asia. China's reaction and the reactions of the other Asian nations are explored in The Asian Games. There is another premise in the publication that the `Chinese' Asian Games were a harbinger of a wider dominance to come: geopolitically, politically, militarily, economically and culturally. And there is a further issue raised by the Guangzhou Asian Games- the continuing determination of the Asian nations to mount a distinctive Games that is Asian and resistant to the cumbersome gigantism of the Modern Olympic Games. Asia now has the wealth to promote, present and project a global sports mega-event with an Asian identity and in an Asian idiom. This Collection is unique in focus, argument and evidence. This book was published as a special issue of the International Journal of the History of Sport.

An Absence of Competition The Sustained Competitive Advantage of the Monopoly Sports Leagues

An Absence of Competition The Sustained Competitive Advantage of the Monopoly Sports Leagues

Author: Neil Longley Format: Hardback Release Date: 12/12/2013

This book takes a multi-disciplinary approach to analyzing the nature of `competition' and `competitive advantage' within the U.S. pro sport industry. By many measures, the four major pro sports leagues in the U.S. - the National Football League (NFL), National Basketball Association (NBA), National Hockey League (NHL), and Major League Baseball (MLB) - are now some of the most successful business entities in the country. While these established leagues have generally been highly profitable throughout their respective existences, the past two decades have been particularly lucrative, with franchise values in all four leagues growing rapidly, and at levels well beyond market rates of return. Within this context, the book seeks to explore the nature of the competitive advantage that these leagues apparently possess. The purpose is to identify not only how these leagues have been able to get to where they are today, but also to examine the competitive threats and opportunities that these leagues face as they move forward. A key contribution of the book is that it analyzes these issues from a multi-disciplinary approach including a traditional economics perspective, public policy and public choice theory and strategic management, to provide a parallel explanation for the success of each of the four major leagues. It argues that no single conceptual approach can, in itself, adequately explain the full richness of the issue. Its stresses that these various approaches should generally be viewed as complements, rather than as being mutually exclusive, and that a full understanding of the issue requires one to adopt a multi-disciplinary perspective, making it of interest to scholars in strategic management, sport management, and economics. It can serve as an effective teaching tool in both graduate and upper-level undergraduate courses for students in these fields, and is particularly useful for faculties seeking to emphasize to their students the importance of a multi-disciplinary, integrative, approach when analyzing business and management issues. The book may also be of interest to leaders within the sport industry itself, and will help to provide insight and perspective as leagues seek to enhance their competitive advantage in the marketplace.

Bidding for Development How the Olympic Bid Process Can Accelerate Transportation Development

Bidding for Development How the Olympic Bid Process Can Accelerate Transportation Development

Author: Ngiste Abebe, Mary Trina Bolton, Maggie Pavelka, Morgan Pierstorff Format: Hardback Release Date: 14/11/2013

In 2012, over four billion people tuned in to watch the London Summer Olympics. As the single largest mega-event in the world, the Olympics has the power to captivate the global imagination. Long before athletes vie for a gold medal, however, competition between cities eager to host the Games kicks off with a rigorous bid process. The lengthy and expensive endeavor to host the Olympics is as high-stakes as any sporting event. Rather than encouraging cities to refrain from bidding, Bidding for Development takes a policy approach that challenges stakeholders to bid responsibly and strategically in pursuit of concrete outcomes. Every bid city has the potential to accelerate long-term transportation development through a strategic and robust planning process. This book concentrates on the phenomenon of repeat Olympic bids and the opportunities that may come from bidding, particularly for those cities that never win the Games. In this context, Bidding for Development explores the intersection between transportation infrastructure development, the Olympic bid process, and the resulting legacies experienced by bid losers. The findings address the central question: how can participating in the Olympic bid process accelerate transportation development regardless of the bid result? In response, this book presents a Bid Framework outlining how and when cities may use the bid to unite resources, align transportation priorities, and empower leaders to achieve urban development objectives in preparation for the Olympic bid. The Bid Framework is then applied to two case studies, Manchester and Istanbul, to examine each bid loser's effectiveness in using the bid process to catalyze transportation development. Concurrently, the book takes into consideration how the International Olympic Committee's evolving bid regulations and requirements relate to urban development and positive social legacy. Bidding for Development delivers actionable recommendations for all Olympic stakeholders to improve the value of the bid process and transportation benefits beyond the Games.

Sports Sponsorship Principles and Practices

Sports Sponsorship Principles and Practices

Author: John A. Fortunato Format: Paperback / softback Release Date: 30/08/2013

This book focuses on how the sponsorship of sports works: the costs, the goals, evaluation and selection of the property a sponsor chooses, how to activate a sponsorship, how to create a brand association, public relations and brand image possibilities. Anything is possible in a sponsorship, it is simply what the sponsor and the property can agree to during their negotiations. There is for example the opportunity for product category exclusivity--no competing brand at a particular location. With the audience being harder to reach because of technology, sponsorship continues to be a viable way to obtain brand exposure and better connect a brand with a consumer. With global sponsorship spending totaling more than $48 billion, it is clear that many companies see this as an important promotional communication strategy.
