Chesapeake Sails: A History of Yachting on the Bay

Chesapeake Sails: A History of Yachting on the Bay

Author: Richard Henderson Format: Hardback Release Date: 20/09/1999

Many books document the workboats of the Chesapeake, but for decades bay waters have been home to another kind of craft: sailboats designed and built strictly for the fun of racing or cruising. This book traces the popularity of sailing yachts in the Chesapeake Bay. Here, the term yacht does not suggest a large or luxurious vessel; rather, it describes a pleasure boat of any size. The author depicts these sailing yachts not only by the details of their design and construction, but also through the eyes and actions of their skippers and crews, effectively alternating factual history with the carefree and often humorous perspective of the sailors. From early contests that involved working craft to today's regattas and one-design events, racing boats have provided an outlet for the competitive spirit of the crew. A variety of bay cruising boats have carried their owners comfortably around the bay and beyond. And the occasional boat has succeeded in both areas, as exemplified by the famous Finisterre, a cruising design that won the Newport-Bermuda race three times in a row. Among the bay designers, Thomas C. Gillmer is known for his association with the Pride of Baltimore, a replica of the historic Baltimore schooner. He also designed the Seawind 30, said to be the first fiberglass boat to sail around the world. Other bay boats described in the book include two versions of a Tancook whaler, the Owens Cutter, the Oxford 400, and boats by William C. Dickerson and Thomas E. Colvin. The illustrations presented throughout the bookawhether hull-line sketches, sail-plan drawings, or full-sail photosaare reminders of the particular beauty of sailing yachts and the special joy of yachting on the bay.

Sporting Life Horses, Boxers, Rivers and a Russian Ballclub

Sporting Life Horses, Boxers, Rivers and a Russian Ballclub

Author: Bill Barich Format: Hardback Release Date: 01/09/1999

Bill Barich's widely praised work doesn't get any better than these intimate glimpses into the stories behind the stories, the real lives behind the public facades of sports Here Barich lets his vivid insight loose upon this earliest passion, delving into the oft-misinterpreted worlds of both participatory and spectator sports, examining: -- three different types of horse racing: down-and-dirty bush racing in Cajun country; the elegant steeplechase at Ascot, England; and a big-time Santa Anita thoroughbred heading for the Kentucky Derby -- two boxers from radically opposite ends of the spectrum: Pat Lawlor struggling to make it, and Mike Tyson battling his emotions -- two fly-fishing adventures on legendary California rivers -- and the world's strangest baseball club, the Moscow Red Devils, barnstorming the United States with Soviet trinkets for sale and skills on a par with good American high school teams Every piece shines with Barich's distinctive voice, an approach that splendidly balances both enthusiasm and criticism with healthy doses of humor The result is a rare, informed, and thoroughly enjoyable visit with subjects addressed by many, but mastered by very few.

Brook Trout and the Writing Life

Brook Trout and the Writing Life

Author: Craig Nova Format: Hardback Release Date: 01/09/1999

Brook Trout and the Writing Life is an autobiography in which the essential way of giving thanks and of appreciating life is through fishing. From the first brook trout the author catches to the most recent, this book is a paean to the beauty of the fish and an emblem of the good things in life. The brookie is a constant, something that mitigates against the passage of time, defending against events we would like to forget. But, as Nova fishes for them in Maine, New York, and Vermont, they become a graceful embodiment of the important moments in his life -- falling in love, having children, making friends, writing novels. The worlds commingle. His life intertwines with his love of clear brooks and the jewellike brook trout. And while the book explores the best of the author's fishing experiences in all their delicious detail, as well as his giving thanks, it also looks into the darker moments -- as when Nova found himself wearing a bullet-proof vest provided by the F.B.I. Brook Trout and the Writing Life is part autobiography, part fishing literature, all imbued with a sense of the delight and mystery in moving water and wild brookies. This is a gem of a book, by one of America's finest novelists.
