Author: Robin Spence, Emily So Format: Hardback Release Date: 29/07/2021

Using the experienced gained from many years as members of the UK's Earthquake Engineering Field Investigation Team (EEFIT) the authors will explain how buildings have fared in recent earthquakes around the world. Using empirical evidence and analyses they will show: why buildings have collapsed the way buildings collapse in earthquakes which building types are the main cause of casualties in earthquakes They will illustrate the key lessons learnt about failures as well as successes in earthquake engineering and disaster preparedness and will review what is being done to reduce vulnerability to earthquakes.

Developing the Competitive Advantage of Indigenous Construction Firms

Developing the Competitive Advantage of Indigenous Construction Firms

This book takes a pragmatic approach to develop the competitive advantage of indigenous construction firms in the Global South, using Ghana as a case study. It provides readers with two major practical insights. The first focuses on the theoretical underpinning of firms' competitive advantage and develops a competitive advantage model for indigenous construction firms. The developed conceptual framework thus aids in explaining the main and sub-attributes underpinning the competitive advantage of indigenous construction firms as well as providing the basis for assessing a firm's competitiveness. Secondly, it highlights and addresses theoretical gaps in existing competitive advantage studies deemed essential for indigenous construction firms. Finally, a detailed two-stage Delphi Study of the Ghanaian construction company is presented as a case study. The book is therefore of interest to researchers in construction management, strategic management, civil engineering, business administration, marketing, entrepreneurial and economic studies. It is an essential manual for owners and managers of construction businesses. It is also useful for government departments and non-governmental agencies seeking innovative ways to develop the capacity of indigenous firms and/or contractors to make them more responsive to competitive bidding scenarios, delivery of projects and satisfying the needs of the industry's stakeholders.

Guidelines for Thermography in Architecture and Civil Engineering

Guidelines for Thermography in Architecture and Civil Engineering

Author: Torsten Richter, Nabil A. Fouad Format: Hardback Release Date: 07/06/2021

What does it take to obtain significant measurement results in thermographic examinations? These guidelines convey in condensed form the authors' many years of experience in detecting thermal engineering defects and structural damage such as thermal bridges, air leaks or moisture penetration damage with a non-destructive and easily applicable method of measurement and investigation. As well as providing an introduction to the physical fundamentals of thermography, the book offers an up-to-date overview of the technology, structure, standards and selection criteria of common thermographic systems. Using selected examples, it shows the many possibilities and areas of application of infrared thermography as well as the limits of its use.

Calcium Aluminates

Calcium Aluminates

Format: Hardback Release Date: 31/05/2021

In their 112-year history, the many special characteristics of Calcium Aluminate Cements have led to their use in all kinds of applications that are beyond the capabilities of other cements, such as Portland cements. This encompasses characteristics such as chemical resistance, rapid hardening properties, high temperature resistance, and an ideal component for blended systems and many more. The first International conference on calcium aluminate cements was held in London in 1990 and since then there have been further events in Edinburgh (2001) and twice in Avignon, France (2008 and 2014). This volume presents the fifth conference in this series and once again provides essential reading for anyone interested in the subject. This volume contains over 60 international contributions with the most up to date information about calcium aluminates and their unique properties. Topics covered include new types, hydration and durability studies including blended systems, the latter are now widely used and some of these have significantly different hydration chemistry to the pure calcium aluminates. A variety of applications of these interesting cements is covered, including traditional applications such as concretes for contrasting marine situations (seabed and coastal), temperature-resistant refractory applications, formulated blended systems within the building chemistry sector along with the necessary admixtures and the many uses in corrosive biogenic situations that give sewage system infrastructure a considerably longer lifespan. Other new applications are also explored including 3D printing, thermochemical storage encapsulation, oil well cements, and ettringite-based repair systems. The peer-reviewed papers presented in these proceedings include a wide variety of techniques used by the authors to deliver new understanding of aspects of these cements and will undoubtedly drive future research into the various aspects of these cements.

Housebuilding, Planning and Community Action

Housebuilding, Planning and Community Action

Author: John R. Short, Stephen Fleming, Stephen J. G. Witt Format: Hardback Release Date: 16/05/2021

First published in 1986, Housebuilding, Planning and Community Action was written as an examination of the conflicts and tensions resulting from private sector housing growth in Central Berkshire, part of Britain's 'Silicon Valley' along the M4 motorway. The book provides a detailed consideration of the various 'actors' and their interactions and explores the fight from Community groups and parish councils to halt development, in opposition to the government's reluctance to discourage economic growth. It focuses on four groups closely involved in the production, allocation, and consumption of new housing: speculative housebuilders, local planning authorities, parish councils, and community/residents' groups. The motivations and actions of each group are examined, and the tensions between them are highlighted, set within the context of central government attitudes towards planning and private housebuilding. Housebuilding, Planning and Community Action has lasting relevance for those interested in human geography, and the history of housebuilding and planning.

Professional Ethics in Construction and Surveying

Professional Ethics in Construction and Surveying

This textbook responds to the increasing demand for practical, industry aligned, ethical practices in quantity surveying, construction management and related AEC professions. Professional Ethics for Construction and Surveying addresses how existing ethical standards can be pragmatically applied to both private and contracting practice, with case studies aligned with the ethical requirements of the main professional bodies. After an introduction to ethics, the authors present real-world situations where the minimum legal and contractual requirements necessitate the combination of professional judgement and ethical decision-making. They outline how such situations arise, then address how decisions can and should be made that are in keeping with the moral, contractual and CSR requirements, with cases covering the building lifecycle from procurement to handover. Consequently, the book brings together ethical theory, existing worldwide ethical standards and the requirements of the RICS, the CIOB and the ICES, with the authors' experiences of examining candidates for entry into the professional bodies. The result is a professionally focused textbook aimed at vocational learners (at both undergraduate and postgraduate taught levels) and practitioners in construction, engineering, architecture and the wider built environment.
