Setting Priorities for Large Research Facility Projects Supported by the National Science Foundation

Setting Priorities for Large Research Facility Projects Supported by the National Science Foundation

In 1995, the National Science Foundation (NSF) created a special account to fund large (several tens of millions of dollars) research facilities. Over the years, these facilities have come to represent an increasingly prominent part of the nationa (TM)s R&D portfolio. Recently concern has intensified about the way NSF is selecting projects for this account. In 2003, six U.S. Senators including the chair and ranking member of the Senate Subcommittee on VA, HUD, and Independent Agencies Appropriations expressed these concerns in a letter to the NRC asking it to a /review the current prioritization process and report to us on how it can be improved.a This report presents a series of recommendations on how NSF can improve its priority setting process for large research facilities. While noting that NSF has improved this process, the report states that further strengthening is needed if NSF is to meet future demands for such projects.

Deflating Information From Science Studies to Documentation

Deflating Information From Science Studies to Documentation

Author: Bernd Frohmann Format: Hardback Release Date: 10/01/2004

Is disseminating information the main purpose of scholarly scientific literature? Recent work in science studies signals a shift of emphasis from conceptual to material sources, from thinking to doing, and from representing the world to intervening in it. Scientific knowledge production is no longer seen as a process of seeking, collecting, organizing, and processing abstract elements, but instead one of assembling the many different material 'bits and pieces' of scientific culture in order to make things work. In Deflating Information, Bernd Frohmann draws on recent work in the social studies of science, finding the most significant material in the coordination of research work, the stabilization of matters of fact, and the manufacture of objectivity. Arguing for a 'deflationary' account of information, Frohmann challenges the central concept of information studies, thereby laying a foundation for a documentalist approach to emerging issues in the field.

Science and Theology since Copernicus

Science and Theology since Copernicus

Author: Peter (Associated Professor of Physics, University of Natal, Durban, South Africa) Barrett Format: Paperback / softback Release Date: 01/01/2004

Modern science has developed in three major phases: the Scientific Revolution; the rise of geology and Darwin's theory of evolution; and the natural sciences of the 20th century.Surveying the key developments in the natural sciences over the past 450 years, this text provides an outline of the present science and theology discourse and suggests how a scientific description of the world may be placed within a broad theistic theme. The first two phases are described through the work of leading ecientific figures, from Copernicus to Newton, and from Linnaeus to Darwin.
