Insect Man Fight Against Malaria in Africa

Insect Man Fight Against Malaria in Africa

Author: Alec Smith Format: Hardback Release Date: 30/09/2019

The title of this book is taken from the author's nickname ('Bwana Dudu') when he worked in Africa: he was a medical entomologist and, with his colleagues, was in the vanguard of the fight against the Anopheles mosquito, carrier of malaria. He joined the Colonial Medical Research Service in 1950, and took up a post in Tanzania (then still Tanganyika) with the newly established Filariasis Research Unit. Dr. Smith later went on to work for the World Health Organisation in Southern Africa and Nigeria, and his book covers vital developments in tropical medicine and deals with, for example, the dilemma over the use of DDT - its initial success followed by growing concern over its long-term effects. There are also lively descriptions of social life in an expatriate community and the close and fruitful relationship with Africa.

Mosquitoes, Communities, and Public Health in Texas

Mosquitoes, Communities, and Public Health in Texas

Mosquitoes, Communities, and Public Health in Texas focuses on 87 known species of mosquitoes found throughout Texas. It includes information on the ecology, medical and public health importance, and biological diversity of each species. In addition, it provides detailed identification keys for both larval and adult stages of all mosquito genera and species known to occur in Texas, along a review of surveillance and control strategies. The expansion of invasive mosquitoes from other regions (including Mexico), together with climate change occurrences increase the likelihood for an increase in diseases, such as West Nile Virus, Yellow Fever, Dengue, Chikungunya and Zika. This unique work is the first unified reference and resource rich in mosquito information for medical entomologists, mosquito and vector control professionals, pest management professionals, biologists, environmentalists, wildlife professionals, government regulators, instructors of medical entomology and public health professionals who have disease or vector responsibilities, mosquito taxonomists, epidemiologists, entomology students, academia, pest control industry, and libraries, etc., with utility for medical, veterinary and health professionals.

The Ecology of Malaria Vectors

The Ecology of Malaria Vectors

This practical book covers all aspects of the biology of malaria vectors, with notes on the vectors of dengue. It is the first work in this field to concentrate on mosquitoes, rather than covering all disease vectors. Authored by renowned field entomologist Jacques Derek Charlwood, it disseminates his vast experience working on mosquito biology, ecology and the evaluation of new vector control tools across five continents over the past 40 years. Covering all aspects from classification and systematics, population dynamics, vector control, to surveillance and sampling, epidemics, and a selection of case histories, the book also considers genetics and resistance, Aedes biology, and malaria and dengue models. It is designed to fill the gap between very specialized texts and undergraduate books on general disease vectors, and is ideal as a textbook for postgraduate courses in entomology and mosquito vectors of disease.
