The American Home Guard

The American Home Guard

Author: Barry M. Stentiford Format: Hardback Release Date: 11/05/2021

Since colonial times Americans have used the militia to maintain order during both war and peacetime. Barry M. Stentiford tells the story of these militia units - variously called home guards, State Guard, National Guard Reserve, and State Defense Forces. Stentiford traces the evolution of the militia over the past century, demonstrating its transformation from an amalgamation of state units into the National Guard. Ironically, the National Guard made the creation of other militia forces necessary during periods of war, as the home guards were organized to fill the vacuum left when the National Guard was called up. Stentiford analyzes the challenges faced by State Guards as they built their new militia with leftover men and material. He also examines the role of the State Guard: providing relief during disasters, providing military training for future draftees, and broadening participation in military units during wartime by giving a role to men who, because of their age or occupation, could not join the federal forces. Today modern state militias must define a role for themselves in a society that increasingly views them as anachronistic. They must also compete with so-called unorganized militias for the title of true heir to the American militia tradition.

Pacific Power?

Pacific Power?

Author: Joanne Wallis Format: Hardback Release Date: 11/05/2021

Australia is much larger and has significantly more military and economic power than its Pacific Island neighbours. As a result, it is frequently described as having a natural right to lead in the region. Yet, Australia has found it difficult to effectively influence Pacific Island states in pursuit of its strategic interests. It provides the definitive account of how, and how effectively, Australia has sought to influence Pacific Island states in pursuit of its strategic interests since 1975, the year that Papua New Guinea, Australia's former colonial territory, gained independence. Informed by interviews with key decision makers, Pacific Power? analyses why Australia has had difficulty exercising influence in the Pacific Islands and identifies how Australia can more effectively influence Pacific Island states in pursuit of its strategic interests, and how Australia can present itself more as a Pacific partner than power.

Defending Britain

Defending Britain

Author: Mike Osborne Format: Paperback / softback Release Date: 20/04/2021

Following work recently brought into sharper focus by the Defence of Britain Project, this is the first extensive overview of the military structures of the twentieth century, combining both documentary and fieldwork research. The book presents details of all those elements of the landscape, both urban and rural, which have resulted from the need to defend against conflict - actual or threatened. Defending Britain explains both the form and purpose of structures such as anti-invasion defences, airfields, naval installations and barracks, munitions dumps and firing ranges, Cold War bunkers and radar sites, factories and stores, all of which are well illustrated. The final section provides the reader with a comprehensive gazetteer of surviving examples to visit throughout Britain.

National Service In Singapore

National Service In Singapore

Author: Shu Huang (Ntu, S'pore) Ho Format: Hardback Release Date: 30/01/2019

National Service (NS) is one of Singapore's foundational public policies. First implemented by the British in 1954, amended in 1967 to provide a means to defend a fledgling independent nation, and codified into its present form in 1970, NS is a key pillar of Singapore's defence. Its significance, however, goes beyond defence. With over 1 million male Singapore citizens and permanent residents having served NS, and consequently involving many more - family members, friends, employers and colleagues - in different ways, NS is deeply woven into Singapore's political and social fabric. This volume brings together a range of scholarly perspectives on NS which explore its past, present and future in four sections: The history of NS, NS in practice, debates on NS and an international perspective. Comprising chapters by individuals from varied backgrounds, National Service in Singapore offers a broad account of one of Singapore's oldest public policies.

The New Nuclear Forensics

The New Nuclear Forensics

Author: Vitaly (Senior Researcher, Senior Researcher, SIPRI) Fedchenko Format: Hardback Release Date: 13/08/2015

Nuclear forensics is the science of determining the history of a sample of radioactive material through the study of the material's characteristics. While nuclear forensic analysis has normally been associated with investigations and prosecutions in the context of trafficking of nuclear materials or nuclear terrorism, it has wider applications in various national security contexts, such as nuclear non-proliferation, disarmament, and arms control. The New Nuclear Forensics provides a survey and an analysis of the scientific discipline of nuclear forensic analysis, and the way it is applied to specific issues of international peace and security, from the 1940s to the present day. This book describes the various methods used in nuclear forensics, giving first a general introduction to the process followed by details of relevant measurement techniques and procedures. In each case, the advantages and limitations are outlined. It uses a language and methodology that opens the issue of nuclear forensics and its potential applications to a non-specialist readership.
