With the abrogation of the Zen Buddhist Fuke sect during Japan's modernisation process in the late nineteenth century, the raison d'Atre for the shakuhachi (Japanese vertical bamboo flute) as a spiritual tool for mendicant monks suddenly vanished. Thereafter, playing the shakuhachi changed from spiritual practice to professional musicianship or musical hobby. The fact that the instrument had been modified and 'improved' has been a well-kept secret. The old style shakuhachi, now named jinashi shakuhachi, became a marginalised instrument for eccentrics. However, during the past decade it has gained popularity, especially outside Japan, where it is considered to be 'the real thing' as opposed to the modernised jinuri shakuhachi. Kiku Day examines how the jinashi shakuhachi, although constructed according to the principles current prior to the Meiji Restoration, itself has been modified to adapt to the needs of modern players. In order to place the instrument into the modern world in its own right, the author, a professional jinashi shakuhachi player, describes her recent collaboration with five international composers on a performance project with the aim of creating a new repertoire. This process of cross cultural creation is described against the background of action research, Theory U, and the theory of flow.

What does freedom sound like in the context of traditional Japanese theater? Where is the space for innovation, and where can this kind of innovation be located in the rigid instrumentation of the Noh drama? In Piercing the Structure of Tradition, Mariko Anno investigates flute performance as a space to explore the relationship between tradition and innovation. This first English-language monograph traces the characteristics of the Noh flute (nohkan), its music, and transmission methods and considers the instrument's potential for development in the modern world. Anno examines the musical structure and nohkan melodic patterns of five traditional Noh plays and assesses the degree to which Isso School nohkan players maintain to this day the continuity of their musical traditions in three contemporary Noh plays influenced by Yeats. Her ethnographic approach draws on interviews with performers and case studies, as well as her personal reflection as a nohkan performer and disciple under the tutelage of Noh masters. She argues that traditions of musical style and usage remain influential in shaping contemporary Noh composition and performance practice, and the existing freedom within fixed patterns can be understood through a firm foundation in Noh tradition.

Thomas Ravenscroft is best-known as a composer of rounds owing to his three published collections: Pammelia and Deuteromelia (both 1609), and Melismata (1611), in addition to his harmonizations of the Whole Booke of Psalmes (1621) and his original sacred works. A theorist as well as a composer and editor, Ravenscroft wrote two treatises on music theory: the well-known A Briefe Discourse (1614), and 'A Treatise of Practicall Musicke' (c.1607), which remains in manuscript. This is the first book to bring together both theoretical works by this important Jacobean musician and to provide critical studies and transcriptions of these treatises. A Briefe Discourse furthermore introduces an anthology of music by Ravenscroft, John Bennet, and Ravenscroft's mentor, Edward Pearce, illustrating some of the precepts in the treatise. The critical discussion provided by Duffin will help explain Ravenscroft's complicated consideration of mensuration, in particular.

The waning years of the Russian Empire witnessed the development of a rich tradition of trumpet playing. Noted trumpet scholar and performer Edward Tarr's latest book illuminates this tradition, which is little known in the West. Tarr's extensive research in hitherto inaccessible Russian archives has uncovered many documents that illuminate the careers of noted performers. These documents are reproduced here for the first time. A concise chronological summary of Russian political and musical developments provides an effective backdrop for this inventory of trumpeters. The author ably demonstrates how profoundly Russian trumpet-playing and pedagogy were influenced by emigrees, particularly from Germany (Wilhelm Wurm, Willy Brandt,Oskar Boehme), and how Russian-born trumpeters like Vladimir Drucker subsequently influenced the American musical scene. In his Lexicon of Trumpeters, both Russian and 'Foreign,' Active in Russia, Tarr supplements his own research with information from valuable but obscure secondary sources in Russian. This lexicon carries the story into the late twentieth century, and includes modern legendary figures such as Timofey Dokshizer.
