American Zeus

American Zeus

Author: Taso G. Lagos Format: Paperback / softback Release Date: 30/10/2017

Alexander Pantages was eleven when arrived in the United States in the 1880s after having contracted malaria in Panama. Speaking a few words in many languages and unable to read or write English, by 1902 he had opened his first motion picture theater in Seattle that started his extraordinary journey in ruthlessly and singlehandedly building one of the largest and most powerful theater circuits in the country. By 1929, Pantages owned or operated 72 theaters, stretching across the United States and into Canada, with a personal fortune in the hundreds of millions. He set standards in theater taste and refinement, and religiously focused on pleasing the customer. Some of his theaters still stand today, a testament to his emphasis on quality and high standards. In 1929 he was accused of sexually assaulting a 17 year-old dancer that destroyed his empire and reduced him to a social pariah. The day his grandest theater, the Pantages Hollywood, opened in 1930, he lay a sick man in a jail hospital bed. It took more than a herculean effort to clear his name, but the question remains: how will history judge this great theater pioneer and exemplar of the American Dream?

Hamlet Lives in Hollywood

Hamlet Lives in Hollywood

Author: Murray Pomerance, Steven Rybin Format: Hardback Release Date: 30/09/2017

John Barrymore's influence on screen and stage in the early twentieth century is incalculable. His performances in the theatre defined Shakespeare for a generation, and his transition to cinema brought his theatrical performativity to both silent and sound screens. This book, a collection of fifteen original essays on the film performances and stardom of John Barrymore, redresses this lack of scholarship on Barrymore by offering a range of varied perspectives on the actor's work. Looking at his performances and influence from the perspectives of gender studies, psychoanalysis, queer studies and performance analysis, Hamlet Lives in Hollywood represents a major attempt by contemporary scholars to come to terms with the ongoing vitality of John Barrymore's work in our present day.

The Ocean Fell Into The Drop

The Ocean Fell Into The Drop

Author: Terence Stamp Format: Paperback / softback Release Date: 21/09/2017

During my first visit to the cinema the empathy I felt from Gary Cooper was life-changing, and a secret dream was born in the darkened auditorium. Later, my forays to the East revealed an original take on humanity which fell into two categories: those who remembered and those who didn't. The former by teaching the latter could transmit this memory, and communicate this spark of creation directly into the being of the other. The Ocean Fell into the Drop is a different kind of showbusiness memoir, one that traces Terence Stamp's twin obsessions, acting and mysticism, and the relationship the two have to each other for him, through the trajectory of his life. On the way he discusses his directors, Fellini, Loach, Pasolini; actors, Olivier, Brando and Redgrave; and spiritual masters, Krishnamurti and Hazarat Inayat Khan, as well as his family, life in the East End, Sufism and style.

Now, in the hopes that those same principles might help and inspire his legions of fans, Chris has decided to share them while recounting the fantastic and hilarious stories that led to the birth of these rules.
