The discovery of a young woman leads Detective Sheehan and his team into a gripping twisting case of racketeering, human trafficking and exploitation. The fifth book in The Inspector Sheehan Mysteries sees Detective Sheehan and the rest of the Serious Crime Unit investigate the death of a young woman found in the garden of an affluent Belfast home. With leads taking the in opposing directions, violent racketeers and human traffickers all thrown into the mix on the team’s hunt for a sinister character called The Shadow, will the case be solved before more lives are lost. This is a police procedural filled with twists and turns. I liked how the narrative is split, following Alina as she embarks on a journey towards a better life and unwittingly into the harrowing exploitation of human traffickers, as well as the Serious Crime Unit as they explore the death of Cheung Mingzhu. I haven’t read any of the previous Inspector Sheehan Mysteries but I found that the characters of Sheehan and the rest of the team came across well, and I was able to follow the story easily. As these books stay mainly case focused I would say that they can be read out of order, but readers who want to build more of a connection to the Serious Crime Unit may prefer to start with Book 1, Angel of Death. I found the plot entertaining, with lots of clues to keep me building multiple theories. There’s plenty of twists and, as usual for me, I didn’t guess the culprit and enjoyed Sheehan’s “Poirot moment” filling in everything I'd missed. This is an engaging read for any police procedural fan, with entertaining and likeable police officers that I could see myself revisiting in the future.
