LoveReading Says

This is an astonishingly beautiful story of a young native American woman who has been raised within her native American reservation, and who unusually ventured out with her community to pursue a university education. A few years later, following the failure of a relationship, she finds herself returning home. Gloria was born into the Hopi tribe of native Americans based in North East Arizona. Her father is the leader of the tribe and is entrusted with long-standing secrets which have been handed down over the years to protect the tribe. The most important of these is the hiding place of the sacred seeds of corn, given corn is the most important resource known to the Hopi tribe. When Gloria’s parents take a short vacation, Gloria is left in charge of their family guest house on the reservation. When an elderly neighbour is found dead, she finds herself struggling to understand the reason anybody would want to kill old man Bonavi. Once the motive becomes evident she knows she has to act quickly. In her father’s absence she realises that it is her job to protect the sacred corn from being stolen, and with the help of a young German man, Erich, staying at the guest house, they endeavour to find and salvage the seeds. However, Gloria is not prepared for how quickly she feels emotionally drawn to Erich, and to the extent of her feelings for him. Hopi women are expected to marry within their tribe and not to “foreigners.” Should she just hide her feelings from Erich? Could he ever be accepted within her family and tribe? I loved this book as not only does it highlight native American culture and tradition in a contemporary setting, but also examines deep, meaningful relationships and the importance of family and friends. A very enjoyable book!
