"I think this is a book that would appeal to teenage girls as it focuses on developing relationships, and increasing confidence with age. "
Nora O’Brien Pacheco is a seventeen year old girl growing up in Bilbao, Spain. Her parents think it would help her personal development, as well as improving her English language, if she did summer school at The Cambrian School in Wales. This leads Nora to question both friendships and family and encourages her to travel to find answers to her questions. When Nora O’Brien Pacheco is sent from her home in The Basque Country in Spain, to a Welsh boarding school for the summer, her first task is to initiate friendship with her two roommates who have very different backgrounds from herself. Gwen is from a mining town in Wales, while Elsi is from Lima, Peru. The three girls immediately share a strong friendship and find themselves caught up in a mysterious situation, involving the discovery of secret passages and witnessing strange scenes within the boarding school. Following her spell at summer school Nora returns to her family home in Bilbao and learns the real reason she was sent to boarding school in Wales. Her newfound confidence from her experience in Wales helps her to make decisions about the behaviour and attitudes of some of her peer group in Bilbao. In addition, she feels the need to better understand her family history which ultimately leads her to travelling to Buenos Aires, and Machu Picchu, the ancient Inca town in southern Peru. As her travels progress, Nora gains a better understanding of who she is, and what is important to her. I think this is a book that would appeal to teenage girls as it focuses on developing relationships, and increasing confidence with age. In addition it describes some fascinating South American destinations which could be a catalyst for future travel.
