Clover's Child by Amanda Prowse

Lovereading view...

England in the late 1950s, the feel for the period capturing the atmosphere of London faultlessly but it is the characters who truly grab you; very real and clearly drawn, very three dimensional. It is a heartbreaking story about forbidden love between a poor white girl and the son of the richest and most influential family in St Lucia, a handsome, charming, fun loving black boy. It is a wonderful, sad, but heart-warming story about enduring love and loss, tragedy and joy. The author really draws you into these people’s lives, especially our heroine Dot. The descriptions of her thoughts and emotions make you tingle, whether she is deliriously happy of devastated by loss. Superb.

If you like Amanda Prowse you might also like to read books by Jodi Picoult, Joanna Trollope and Dorothy Koomson.

Synopsis

Clover's Child by Amanda Prowse

When eighteen-year-old Dot meets Sol, she feels that love has arrived at last. Solomon Arbuthnott is a man who can bring colour and warmth to her drab life in sixties London - and what's more, he is a young, handsome soldier with excellent prospects. But this is 1961. East End girls don't date West Indian boys, let alone fall in love with them and leave the country. They stay at home and live the life their parents planned for them. Even if it leaves them lonelier than they ever thought possible. Even if it rips their heart in two...

For me, to read is to learn, to reflect, to escape, to think, to contemplate and my time for space and calm.

Lovereading is not only an amazing site, but it's one of my very favourites. It's like visiting a fascinating bookstore, but better.
