"This intelligent and compelling debut thriller has a corkscrewing plot that spins between a London Solicitors dealing with immigration appeals and a removal centre holding asylum seekers."
Unique and timely, clever and witty, this is a thriller with undeniable attitude. Alex Donovan, a solicitor working with refugee cases, finds himself increasingly lost and, as he struggles with all aspects of his life, he makes a radical and potentially dangerous decision. Debut author Tom Gaisford obviously knows his stuff, as a qualified barrister in immigration and asylum law, he ensures this feels as authentic as can be. As I read, I found myself totally immersed, and didn’t doubt for a moment that this could in fact happen. Actually it feels like a warning, and the End Note further impresses the timing of this story. While undeniably smart and assured, there are also moments of humour which are beautifully placed. I loved how the plot twists and writhes, and how it left me at times racing to catch up. I could easily picture this as a television series as it felt so visual and connected to events that currently surround us. Smart as heck and containing a taut energy, Sanctuary is an exciting and convincing read.
