The foundation of a unique fantastical saga. The storyline of ‘Birth of the Tiptons’ is split into two timelines. In 2019 we have an unnamed narrator who meets Fredrick in Hyde park and is told the story of orphaned twin boys, George and Charles Tipton who lived in Victorian England and whose family line is destined to change the world. I thought that this was a unique way to start a series, as you would usually expect the character with the hero’s journey to receive the backstory that explains “why them” either as a prequel or in an info dump spanning a couple of paragraphs or chapters. It’s interesting to see the story unfold, the moving parts and the characters at play right from the very start. It’s clear by the detail included as we step back in time to follow the Tipton twins that a lot of work and research has been put into this book. Following along with George and Charles’ story feels authentic (not including the more fantastical elements), and the author does a great job bringing Victorian London to life with descriptions of the setting. The supernatural elements of this saga are firmly established in this book, ready to be built on throughout the rest of the saga. These add a new and entertaining angle to the story. ‘Birth of the Tiptons’ is an easy-to-read storyline that has lightness and humour. The ineptness of certain characters, wordplay, misdirection and miscommunications amount to moments of farce and parody that are quite funny. In all the book does a very good job of setting the scene for future books in the series. I think that readers of historical fiction will like the Victorian elements of the story and anyone looking for an easy, entertaining, fantastical read would enjoy this book.
