A bold, hugely original, multi-genre, cracking read. A private eye in a reimagined New York, where the internet and electronic data is as dead as a dodo, is asked to trace a woman. Within the first few words Maxim Jakubowski thoroughly set the scene, within a short time I felt a part of this world, could stand in the streets and take a gawking look around me. The clipped sentences of the investigator hark back to private eye novels, yet this is no caricature. The characters sing with intensity, sitting on the edge of larger than life, they feel as real as real can be. I smirked, raised my eyebrows, and flinched (oh how I flinched), as we cleaved through dystopian, slipped inside erotica, and smashed into supernatural. Right up my street, I absolutely adored this read. ‘The Louisiana Republic’ is a tale that refuses to be labelled, it is quite simply a raw, provocative, unique experience for lovers of the written word. ~ Liz Robinson

The Louisiana Republic Synopsis
Following an unexplained worldwide catastrophe in which the Internet and all electronic records have been wiped out, much of the USA is in a state of anarchy, with regions/states seceding and not allowing visitors in or people out. An involuntary NYC private eye is asked by a beautiful, if damaged woman to find her younger sister who has disappeared. They are both the daughters of a sinister man, the Commander, who is pulling the strings in a city where Central Park has become a no man's land. Following the trail of nude photos the younger sister was a part of, the detective unravels some of the threads of a major conspiracy, albeit at his bodily peril, assisted by the daughter of the King of Washington Square who helps him evade 'Reservoir Dogs', the Commander's lethal henchman and April Lea an Amazonian model who is also a martial arts fighter and the Commander's Punisher. When a clue left by a dead photographer indicates the young woman is now in New Orleans - alongside the love of the detective's life whom he thought was dead - which is cut off from the rest of the world, the detective and his sidekick make a perilous journey down the Mississippi and manage to smuggle their way into the city, now controlled by an assortment of bizarre gangs, where they face new perils, of a possible supernatural nature which might have a bearing on the worldwide catastrophe and he makes a journey through hell and back to not just solve the case but save his own soul and find the woman he once loved before the world broke down.

About Maxim Jakubowski
Maxim Jakubowski is a London-based novelist and editor. He was born in the UK and educated in France. Following a career in book publishing, he opened the world-famous Murder One bookshop in London. He now writes full-time. He has two books of erotic photography, as well as many acclaimed crime collections. His novels include It's You That I Want To Kiss, Because She Though She Loved Me and On Tenderness Express, all three recently collected and reprinted in the USA as Skin In Darkness. Other books include Life In The Word of Women, The State of Montana, Kiss Me Sadly and Confessions Of A Romantic Pornographer. In 2006 he published American Casanova, a major erotic novel which he edited and on which fifteen of the top erotic writers in the world have collaborated, and his collected erotic short stories as Fools For Lust. He compiles two annual acclaimed series for the Mammoth list: Best New Erotica and Best British Crime. He is a winner of the Anthony and the Karel Awards, a frequent TV and radio broadcaster, a past crime columnist for the Guardian newspaper and Literary Director of London's Crime Scene Festival.
