This is the second in the series form this highly popular lawyer. Smith draws on the stories from his legal career to offer up another genius comic memoir (although I believe there is some artistic license in there). Described as the ‘Rumpole of Rotherham’ he will make you laugh and be amazed at what goes on in the legal world.
Book Two in the gloriously comic but touching legal memoirs from 'the Rumpole of Rotherham' - criminal lawyer Steve Smith.
As 1983 draws to a close, the clients and associates of Wilford Smith Solicitors in Rotherham continue to produce equal measures of tragedy and farce. From career criminal Jack Heptonstall and his vast brood to manic insurance broker Sean Page, they're all bent on keeping Steve Smith's life interesting.
Starting with the accidental theft of a boa constrictor - along with twenty thousand cigarettes and a Ford Transit - Steve struggles with Fifi DuPont and various other exotically named hookers, a ragbag of crimes both petty and large, villains and victims of all shapes and sizes, and a double migration by the Heptonstall family, to name but a few. But true to form, he finds both humanity and humour in everything life throws at him, and distils it all for our rich enjoyment...
After entering the profession ‘by default’, Steve Smith worked his way up from office boy’s assistant (‘my first job was to blow up a rugby ball for the senior partner’s son’) to co-founder of the criminal law practice Wilford Smith, based in Rotherham in South Yorkshire.
Boozers, Ballcocks & Bail – the first book in Steve’s comic legal series - was originally self-published, and said to be ‘the most shoplifted book in Yorkshire.’
A professional public speaker in his spare time, Steve is married with a daughter and lives in Rotherham. He was awarded an MBE in the 2006 Queen’s Birthday Honours List for his services to charity, and is president of Rotherham Town Cricket Club.
