Synopsis

Gertrude Jekyll An Anthology - The Making of a Garden by Gertrude Jekyll

This anthology encompasses a legacy of gardening lore left by Gertrude Jekyll, (1843-1932) one of the great gardeners of the century. Her ten gardening books were published between 1899 and 1937 and it is from these that the excerpts in this anthology have been selected. Trained at art school, Gerturde Jekyll developed strongly held views on design, form and the use of colour in the garden, and it is these views which are reflected in this selection which takes us through the year, season by season.

Reviews

Gertrude Jekyll was trained in the arts, but failing eyesight in later years led her to concentrate on her other love - gardening. She published her first gardening book in 1899, at the age of 56, and produced 12 further books over the next 25 years, which editor and compiler Lewis has used to produce this exquisite anthology. It opens with a general chapter in which Gertrude talks of her own early experiences and of the importance of gardens for children. She discusses beginning and learning, planning and planting, then she tackles the specifics, from wall gardening to woods and wild gardens, climbing plants to kitchen gardens. The four subsequent chapters cover Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. Here practical suggestions and personal observations are studded with intriguing anecdotes, such as the author's encounter with the Ghost Cart. This is far from being just a gardening manual, and yet it contains a wealth of tips and hints which any keen gardener will pounce on. Gertrude Jekyll's formal and gracious prose will be as much a delight to the reader of this book as the enchanting watercolours and mouth-watering photos. (Kirkus UK)
