You might be aware of Wim Hof as the man that spends a lot of time in cold water and freezing temperatures – and the star of the BBC One show Freeze The Fear.

Also known as The Iceman, he’s an extreme athlete who claims that his breathing techniques and exposure to cold can reduce inflammation in the body and contribute to better health. Having first jumped into icy water aged 17, he's not looked back for the last 46 years and content with simply being able to hold his breath for six minutes and withstand sub zero temperatures, Wim has been breaking world records, currently 26 of them.

The new challenge show takes celebrities including – Tamzin Outhwaite, Alfie Boe, Professor Green, Patrice Evra, Gabby Logan, Chelcee Grimes and Diane Buswell to the Italian mountains to try out Wim’s methods in a bid to improve their wellbeing.

Theoretically a stressful exposure can have harmful effects at high doses but at low doses it can actually create changes in our body that make us healthier and stronger, called "hormetic stress". Stress can be a good thing.

With a foreword by Elissa Epel PHD, medical school researcher, we are introduced to Wim and given the context of the objectivity and scepticism needed to deliver this method in pilot trials. They believe it has the power to improve health and wellbeing but also potential for slowing the aging process.

If you'd like to have more energy, less stress and a stronger immune system, sleep better, boost your mood, lose weight and alleviate your anxiety then this book might be for you. As we have evolved we have lost our innate ability not only to survive but to thrive in extreme environments. The Wim Hof Method is based on three simple pillars: cold exposure, conscious breathing and the power of the mind. This book can act as your guide to safely practice Wim's methods at home.

I'm not a convert yet, I've not been brave enough yet to immerse myself in all of Wim's methods, but I do believe that his connection with nature has enabled him to achieve incredible things. Starting with a cold shower a day to keep the doctor away, I now appreciate that all of those little muscles in your vascular system, millions of them, are activated and exercised and your vascular fitness improves.Wim calls in the entry point from which you'll learn the power of the mind over the body.

Whether you're a lover of Wim or a sceptic, this book tells his remarkable life story and is a powerful guide to mind over matter, a fascinating look at his life and methods
