Reviews

I found this book most interesting for the way in which Jane approaches her work. The glimpses of sketchbooks and storyboards is precious. This will be of great interest to other textile designers and students. To learn how to translate something in nature to a finished piece of embroidery is key to understanding the creative process. Jane's work is miraculous, and I don't blame her for not producing a how-to book. She has a unique approach and anyone would do well to study her methods and develop their own unique embroideries. This is a beautifully illustrated book.-KarenPlatt.co.uk You may remember back in May 2007 we reviewed a beautiful book featuring the art and embroidery of Jane Hall. This book explores Jane's extraordinary world, the materials she uses, her techniques plus her understanding and interpretation of nature. Quite simply, it was a beautiful hardback book, but expensive for many budgets. It's great to hear that it's now been published in paperback. Packed with ideas, inspiration and information, it will appeal to all embroiderers and textile artists everywhere. Jane presents breathtakingly beautiful embroideries through numerous photographs and descriptions, which convey the essence of her work.-Machine Knitting Monthly A unique combination of art, photography and prose, as the author intertwines her exquisite work as a textile artist with her inspirations from nature. Her work 'evolves rather than resolving to a plan'. It gives an insight into her studio, showing equipment, drawing board, pencils, fabrics, threads, inspirational memorabilia and the treasures with which she works. Printer's type trays provide a perfect display case for things she has fashioned as well as inspirational treasures. The beautiful finished pieces are captured in stunning photographs and descriptions. Packed with ideas, inspiration and information that will appeal to embroiderers and textile artists.-Sew Today Jane Hall talks about Nature as she experienced it as a child: magical, all absorbing and totally real. The interest in all things natural developed in her childhood, have exerted a great influence on her creative output. Her use of fibres and silk have allowed her to create images in three dimensions which lift off the surface and bring into being the plants and insects she so adores. This book is full of inspiring ideas and Jane explains her working methods and how the final pieces are evolved. There are lots of photographs, both of her work and its inspiration which are helpful to embroiderers or even people who like to paint nature. A very interesting take on Natural Forms.-Meg-online.info This is a re-issue of Jane's book in soft-cover format. Her deep love and knowledge of nature is apparent in her exquisite designs, each accurately executed. The beautiful colour photography conveys the intimate details of Jane's subjects: the soft sheen of a bird's feather, the fragile delicacy of a butterfly wing or the golden brittleness of autumnal leaves - all are portrayed using fabrics and silk threads, dyed by Jane. This is a book for every embroiderer's bookshelf, guaranteed to inspire, inform and raise the most jaded of spirits.-East Kent Embroiderers

's beautiful book when it was first published, now's the time to treat yourself (and her delicate embroideries are a real treat!) as it has now been published in paperback. Jane's fragile-looking creations capture the transient beauty of the natural world; every element is meticulously observed and she uses silk, wire and thread to emulate nature's glories. Mostly hand stitched, her work develops from countless hours of study and, just like the natural world that inspires them, each embroidery develops slowly and painstakingly. Drawings and detailed photographs convey the essence of Jane's work and allow you to become part of the world that inspires her exquisite textiles.-Stitch Jane Hall talks about Nature as she experienced it as a child: magical, all absorbing and totally real.
