A brilliant, brave, cool and clever book about the highs and lows of juggling a startup and married life which I know will be one of my favourite reads of the year.
Asha Ray and Cyrus Jones marry 2 months after they met the second time. 13 years after the first time when Asha was in love with Cyrus in ninth grade. Cyrus stepped into her brain at college like she was putting on a really great pair of sneakers for the first time. And she was hooked.
Asha is a genius computer scientist who has an idea to create a social networking app that has the potential to change the media landscape forever. WAI is born from her laptop: focusing on interests, beliefs and passions not likes and dislikes. Her algorithm grabs the attention of a secretive tech incubator who invite them in, they become Utopians and it all changes.
So relevant, of-the-moment, so fresh and modern, I am desperate to read more of Anam. Aptly titled The Startup Wife: How to Succeed in Business and Marriage at the Same Time, this novel features the highs and lows of it all: the pressure of a startup, the work, love, ambition, sex and lack of balance. All wrapped up in an oh-so-readable and fabulously funny package.
It’s about finding your voice and never being “smalled down”, about finding your tribe, your feminist cavalry. As I wiped away a few tears and my book hangover began I stroked the cover and marvelled at the brilliance of it all. A book I wish I’d written.
Selected as a Best Book of 2021 by the Observer, Stylist, Cosmopolitan, Red and the Daily Mail Halfway through her PhD and already dreaming of running her own lab, computer scientist Asha has her future all mapped out. Then a chance meeting and whirlwind romance with her old high-school crush, Cyrus, changes everything. Dreaming big, together with their friend Jules they come up with a revolutionary idea: to build a social networking app that could bring meaning to millions of lives. While Asha creates an ingenious algorithm, Cyrus' charismatic appeal throws him into the spotlight. When the app explodes into the next big thing, Asha should be happy, shouldn't she? But why does she feel invisible in the boardroom of her own company? Why are decisions being made without her? Gripping, witty and razor-sharp, The Startup Wife is a blistering novel about big ambitions, speaking out and standing up for what you believe in.
