Synopsis

Those Railway People by G. T. Smith

Those Railway People is a tribute to the people that worked on, or for, the railways. It is a book about the people connected with railways throughout history with an interesting story to tell. Some of the characters covered may be well-known, such as Brunel and the Stephensons. Some of the incidents highlighted may provide further insights into their characters - such as why Brunel led a private army into battle against an obstructive contractor. Then there is the tale of Charlotte Bronte's brother, who briefly became a station master on one of the first railways, and the story of William Huskisson MP who died because of Stephenson's Rocket. Others who appear in Those Railway People might be less well-known - such as the young girl who operated a railway drawbridge over a canal. In the long history of our railways all these people had a part to play, they came from a variety of backgrounds and walks of life but their stories are carefully captured by G.T. Smith in his fascinating new book.
