LoveReading Expert Review of Come Sail With Me

This is an interesting read for armchair travellers and sailing aficionados, the author describes the trials and tribulations of sailing, the myriad of things that break, the temperamental weather and the vital hard graft as well as the moments of peace, stunning experiences of nature and far flung destinations.

Adventures and challenges of a life at sea, ‘Come Sail With Me’ by Wendy Leo-Smith describes the moment the author accepts an opportunity to sail a small racing yacht to Brazil from Gran Canaria. Life onboard and its challenges are described as well as the relationship with Rory, the ship’s owner and only other crew. This is an interesting read for armchair travellers and sailing aficionados, the author describes the trials and tribulations of sailing, the myriad of things that break, the temperamental weather and the vital hard graft as well as the moments of peace, stunning experiences of nature and far flung destinations. The author manages to maintain the diary style format when creating ‘Come Sail With Me’ and I found this writing style and format easy to enjoy while it also clearly sets out how much time has passed. Having read about this experience from a different perspective in ‘Jabula’ by Rory Leo-Smith, I found that ‘Come Sail With Me’ went into more detail about the day-to-day life aboard the Zingara. The entertaining trials in order to sort out the laundry, Bella, Zingara’s feline mascot, the Rio carnival and the ventures to find Sloths are just some of the details that I think help this book to appeal to a broader audience interested in travel. There’s a relatable tone to ‘Come Sail With Me’ and I found this a very well-rounded account that I think fans of travel as well as fans of sailing would enjoy.

THE WOMAN WHO TOOK A CHANCE…

LIFE CAN REALLY BEGIN AGAIN. Wendy was living alone in the South of Spain when, out of the blue, she received an offer from Rory, a South African she barely knew. Rory was far from ordinary and his plan likewise, to sail over 3,000-miles to Brazil, via West Africa, just two up on Zingara, his 42-foot ocean racing yacht.

Deep in the ocean, Wendy immerses us into the joys and perils of their day-to-day life and, in the quiet times, shares some personal thoughts on her traumatic life gone by. Surprisingly, every passage of their 13,500-mile Atlantic voyage offers something entirely different from being spellbound by the sea life to petrified by the elements. The only constant being sailing a demanding yacht short-handed tests their endurance to beyond the limit.

During the five years, their route takes them way off the-beaten-track and Wendy brings to life the vibrant but deadly cities and remote communities they make their home along with Miss Bella, the feisty feral kitten. She, after hearing the wild and reckless stories of Rory's youth, starts to question her own sanity for blindly following him into various life-threatening escapades. But is Rory really to blame?

A once-in-a-lifetime adventure like this would always expose them to the risk of hurricanes, piracy and dismasting but, never did Wendy imagine that they would have to learn to cope with them all. Surely, no one could be that unfortunate?
