Four Guys in a Boat

by Tom Watkins

Four Guys in a Boat Synopsis

This breezy escapist tale chronicles the misadventures of a motley crew of college professors who abandon their landlocked lives (and wives) for one week every year and go sailing. Author Tom Watkins vividly recounts a decade's worth of these annual escapes, as the adventurous academics fish, dive, drink, and dream together, all the while coming to a better understanding of themselves and each other. Their travels take them to such exotic locales as the Virgin Islands, Guadeloupe, and the Grenadines, and along the way they encounter a colorful array of salty characters, including famed sailor and author John Caldwell and Undine, the jolly German manager of a tropical restaurant hidden by lush vegetation. Overflowing with rum, cigars, and poker chips, this is a hilarious and insightful glimpse into the secret lives of men.

Four Guys in a Boat Press Reviews

I'm glad I read Four Guys in a Boat, for while I still can't relate to their idea of fun, I did close the book pleased to have had a peak into their very male world on boats. Their navigation and seamanship skills greatly improved as they got more experience on the water. They came to know each other and themselves much better and how they felt about the things that made their lives meaningful. We learn, along with them, about new people and new cultures, and we can understand the enduring memories they take away. * Sailing * Once a year, the author and three fellow college professors abandon their normal lives and their wives to go sailing for a week. In this book he recounts a decade of these annual trips; fishing, diving, rum, cigars, poker and lies. It s an entertaining look at the misadventures men can get themselves into when left to their own devices * Latitudes & Attitudes *
