LoveReading Says
Every now and then I fall completely head over heels for a book, and this is one of those moments. I didn’t want the story to end, so entirely had it caught me, I just wanted to return to page one and experience the wonder all over again. Set in a land of sacred animals, emperors, and hidden magic, a high profile murder leads to an investigation by a socially awkward scholar who has risen through the ranks. I had previously met author Antonia Hodgson’s writing with the wonderful Thomas Hawkins historical crime series, so was immediately intrigued by the thought of her turning to fantasy. She has the ability to plot with intricacy while allowing characters to shine, and brings her worlds to vivid vibrant life. The introductory maps in The Raven Scholar are fabulous, and set the scene. The first few chapters hit hard, and slicing through emotions, they settled into a corner of my mind to wait. The style of the narration is undeniable, gradually asserting character, becoming known, and it is oh-so cleverly done. The fascinating characters, the courtly intrigue and political shenanigans, the battles for survival and friendships, the smallest of details that matter, the unwinding of the complex plot, the wit and wisdom, it is all, wonderful! The 643 pages left their mark on me, I simultaneously wanted to race through while savouring every word. This, the first in the Eternal Path Trilogy, had to join our LoveReading Star Books and become a Liz Pick of the Month, I am already hungering for the next book in my life. Oh, and a shout out to the cover, I felt privileged to dwell in the raven’s magnificence, and I am quite sure that Sol would approve. Wise and beautifully compelling, dramatic and full of suspense, The Raven Scholar lands with precision, scattering preconceptions into the wind. Highly recommended.

The Raven Scholar Synopsis
**BEAUTIFUL FOIL DESIGN ON THE BOARD IS AVAILBLE FOR A LIMITED TIME ONLY, PRE-ORDER ONE NOW TO GUARANTEE A COPY**
From an electrifying new voice in epic fantasy comes a masterfully woven tale of imperial intrigue, cutthroat competition, and one scholar's quest to uncover the truth.
She might win the throne. She might destroy an empire. Either way, it begins with murder.
After twenty-four years on the throne, it is time for Bersun the Brusque, emperor of Orrun, to bring his reign to an end. In the dizzying heat of mid-summer, seven contenders will compete to replace him.
Trained at rival monasteries, each contender is inspired by a sacred animal - Fox, Raven, Tiger, Ox, Bear, Monkey, and Hound. An eighth - the Dragon proxy - will be revealed only once the trials have begun. Eight exceptional warriors, thinkers, strategists - the best of the best.
Then one of them is murdered.
It falls to the brilliant but idiosyncratic Neema Kraa to investigate. But as she hunts for a killer, darker forces are gathering.
If Neema succeeds, she could win the throne - whether she wants it or not. But if she fails, she will sentence herself to death - and set in motion a sequence of events that could doom the empire . . .

About Antonia Hodgson
Antonia Hodgson w as born and grew up in Derby and studied English at the University of Leeds. Her debut novel, THE DEVIL IN THE MARSHALSEA, won the CW A Historical Dagger in 2014 and was shortlisted for the John Creasey First Novel award. In the US, Publishers Weekly named it one of the top 10 Mystery/Thriller titles of the year. She was first introduced to the early Georgians while taking 'A' level History. Unfortunately the course focused almost exclusively on George II's ministerial reshuffles, a subject even George II found staggeringly dull. It was only later, on discovering Hogarth, The Beggar's Opera and Moll Flanders, that she became fascinated by an often-neglected period of British history. Her favourite quote about London in the 1720s comes from a disapproving Swiss traveller, who complained that 'debauch runs wild with an unblushing countenance'. Antonia lives in London, where she works as an editor.
