After the rollercoaster ride of the series so far, A Court of Frost and Starlight may divide opinion. A smaller novel, and a companion novel as opposed to a direct sequel, focusing on the Winter Solstice following the war. We see how the characters are coping in the aftermath and trying to go back to some kind of normality.

I felt like this was a nice balm after the build-up of events in the past series of books. I like narratives that go back to focusing on the mundane for a while instead for finding yet another darker threat for our characters to contend with. This softer, festive interlude hit the spot for me.

Now don't get me wrong there's still conflict. Predominantly, we see Nesta struggle against fitting into the Night Court family and coming to terms with her experiences since being Made. An avenue that will be delved into deeper in the next book A Court of Silver Flames. But this book also has an opportunity to hear the perspectives of some of the other characters: Nesta, Mor, Cassian. The Shadowsinger Azriel must still prefer to keep his own council.

As I've said it's a companion novel. It's short, sweet but not wholly necessary to read before setting out on the next book of the series, but a treat to spend time with some love characters during the festive season nonetheless.
