More secrets, more roller coasters, more spice, more peril, House of Sky and Breath builds on the epic events that concluded House of Earth and Blood in ways that are completely unexpected. Threatened into living a quiet life after saving Lunathion, Bryce Quinlan and Hunt Athalar try to settle into a mundane existence, and are determined to take everything, including their relationship at a slower pace. But as is the way of best laid plans, it’s just not that easy and soon they find themselves once more dragged into the thick of danger.

This book cemented Bryce as my favourite of Sarah J. Maas’ female protagonists. She seemed to improve from the previous book. She’s a fierce opponent whether magically or with her strategic thinking. She has perfect main character energy, the right mix of sass and smarts. We get more of Hunt Athalar too although our Umbra Mortis is perhaps somewhat domesticated this time around, he’s always alert for danger but trying to figure out where his place is in the 33rd and beyond. The chemistry between the two characters is as electrically charged as ever and things are hotting up as their relationship progresses. We also get to spend more time with the wider group, gaining more insight into Ruhn, Tarion and Ithan as well as a broader field of view for the many moving parts in this chess game of a narrative.

With multiple new threats and threads, the group has to walk a tightrope if they’re to make it through this one. And without spoilers, we have to talk about that ending! Honestly one exclamation mark isn’t enough and as soon as I’ve finished writing this I will be taking a swan dive into a wormhole of fan theories until House of Flame and Shadow is released. I’m worried for the safety of my favourite characters and can’t wait to see what the arrival of some familiar faces will bring to the table.
