An Illustrated History of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway by Philip Benham

Today, the North Yorkshire Moors Railway is the most popular of Britain's preserved railways, carrying over 300,000 passengers a year. The line can trace its roots back to the earliest days of railways when, in 1835, the horse drawn Whitby and Pickering Railway first started operations. Despite some excellent photographic surveys, it is now many years since a new book devoted to the railway's history was published. With steam trains now running regularly once more over the whole of the Whitby to Pickering route, this is an appropriate time to revisit the subject. The book charts the building of the first railway, its takeover by George Hudson, assimilation into the North Eastern Railway, and onward progress into the 20th century. The story continues with post-war decline leading to closure in 1965, followed by the Herculean efforts of the dedicated band of preservationists that brought trains back to Pickering within a few years. More recent developments are observed, together with a historical survey of train services, locomotives, rolling stock and structures. The book is a first for author Philip Benham, who is also the General Manager of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. This new book is packed with photographs revealing all the locomotives and rolling stock that are used on services over the North Yorkshire Moors Railway in its new and highly successful life as a preserved line. It is an ideal book not only for railway historians, but also for those who have travelled on the line and are eager to learn more about its history.
