The majority of landlocked States are among the world's poorest nations. Focusing on the link between international law and development, this study reviews the evolutionary features of the transit regime of landlocked States. It provides a detailed historical account of the legal - and to some extent political - relations amongst landlocked and transit countries, and examines the problems and difficulties that these countries have faced.
