The Smugglers' Tales by Denis Applebee

Smugglers, from the infamous Reverend, Dr Syn of the Romney Marshes in the novels of Russell Thorndike to the larger-than-life Jack Rattenbury of the West Country, prospered in the eighteenth century. Gentry and Clerics were equally involved, but in these tales there is a difference. The reverend John Trevethin is as honest a man as could be found, as the reader will discover in the twist at the end of the tale. Likewise, at the end of the second tale, the reader will discover that the rector is also a very brave man of the cloth, willing to rescue even his enemy. These two smugglers' tales introduce the reader to the inhabitants of a Cornish village, the rigours of the French Revolution (so well documented by Charles Dickens and Baroness Orczy) and the exploits of the Rector of Lower Penzel, who somehow gets himself embroiled and endangered, condemned and exonerated.

His books include When I Tread the Verge of Jordan (a theological work) and One Man's Story (his biography). His recordings of The Pilgrim's Progress and a selection of his own children's stories are well known in both the UK and the USA.
