Synopsis

Beautiful Cows by Valerie Porter, Jeremy Hopley, Andrew Perris

Following in the footsteps and hoofprints of Beautiful Sheep and Beautiful Pigs, this awe-inspiring collection features commissioned photographic portraits of the best in bovine beauties. Placing the cows on the catwalk, an award-winning photographer captures them in all their glory. Each beautiful beast is shown posed against a drapery backdrop, and captured at her most manicured moment prior to competition. The top breeds from around the world are grasped by the horns and revealed to a doting public, and there are graphic charts with all the essential breed information. There's also a potted history of cattle, an introduction to the breed basics, plus reportage photography of the behind-the-scenes primping and preening at the agricultural shows. Beautiful Cows is the perfect book for anyone from farmers and committed cow connoisseurs looking to beef up their book collection to lovers of fine photography and natural beauty. An inspired gift, this is also the ideal conversation piece for any gathering-just leave it on the coffee table and prepare to milk the applause.

Reviews

Cows on the cat(tle) walk - whatever next? Daily Express Images of rare bovine breeds can be just as delectable as rare fillet steak. Time Out Bewitching bovines for fancier and philistine alike. Field Cattle do nicely... Bournemouth Echo Full of exactly what they promise - stunning photographs of champion cows with descriptions of each breed. These are modern versions of those oil paintings of prize cattle you occasionally see in stately homes, and a total delight. Independent on Sunday

About the Author

VALERIE PORTER has written several books on breeds of livestock worldwide (cattle, pigs and goats) and on caring for cows in particular. She has been a member of the Rare Breeds Survival Trust for many years and was co-author of the Trust's history, Saving the Breeds. ANDREW PERRIS has tackled a wide range of challenging commissions during the 20 years he has worked as a photographer. Many have included animals, from snails on location to elephants in the studio, but pigs have to be the ultimate challenge so far because they simply do not stand still! That said, he has learned along the way and has met some fantastic characters (and pigs). His numerous corporate and advertising clients include Virgin, Sainsburys, Parker Pens, P&O Ferries, and Royal Bank of Scotland. JEREMY HOPLEY is one of Britain's best-known known lifestyle, still life, food, interiors, and travel photographers. In the past he has worked with numerous authors and chefs including Ken Hom and James Martin. Jeremy's work has appeared in books published by Jacqui Small, Kyle Cathie, Octopus Publishing, Ryland Peters & Small, and Transworld as well as a range of magazines. His list of corporate clients includes Marks & Spencer, Waitrose and Nestle.
