Synopsis

D.C. Oakes - Family,Friends & Foe by LaVonne J. Perkins

The adventures of Daniel Chessman Oakes begin with the California Gold Rush. D.C. Oakes, Aylett Cotton and others left DeWitt, Iowa, in 1849 as part of the Sacramento Mining Company. He returned to Iowa, built a town called Pacific City and after the financial crash of 1857 was asked to check out rumors of gold in Colorado. He wrote a guidebook and was buried in effigy. D. C. was related to Hiram P. Bennet, Colorado's first delegate, and Buffalo Bill Cody. His life intertwined with Kit Carson, Jim Baker, George Eayre, Silas Soule, William Byers, Charles Stobie, Lafayette Head, A. C. Hunt, Colonel Chivington, John Evans and others. He was a vigilante, a member of Denver's first city council and a legislature. He was also the first postmaster of Douglas County and the first president of the pioneer society known as the 59'rs. As Indian agent for the northern Utes he maintained peace for five years. In his later years he surveyed much of Colorado including the much-disputed Sangre de Christo grant.

What can I say, the clue is in the title Lovereading - and awesome books.

Sarah Davis

Lovereading is not only an amazing site, but it's one of my very favourites. It's like visiting a fascinating bookstore, but better.

Rebecca Jayne Barrett

A well laid out site, I love the fact that is separates paranormal fiction from fantasy and horror, which other sites don't.

Jen Rainbow

They are bright, breezy and eager to offer a great book, then genuinely listen/respect the review one writes.

Maggie Crane

Lovereading tells me about new books before they hit the shelves, lets me find other authors I may like and has great prize draws!

Sheila Dale

For me, to read is to learn, to reflect, to escape, to think, to contemplate and my time for space and calm.

Sally Ellsmore

I love the 'like for like' author recommendations, it's like an old friend whispering in your ear.

Emma Caddick

Love Reading - it not only does what it says on the tin, it does it with Jam on!!
