December 2013 Book of the Month.

The author is a screenwriter for the BBC series Spooks and Waking the Dead, and his ability to create fast-action mysteries is repeated in this, his fourth book starring FBI agent Sean Reilly. He here uses a nifty time-slip device to recreate the story of Rasputin and wind it into a modern-day thriller of epic proportions. The cinematic sweep of Rasputin’s Shadow must stem from Raymond Khoury’s background as a producer in film and TV.

If you like Raymond Khoury you might also like to read books by Andy McDermott, Dan Brown and Steve Berry.

The Good Book Guide logo The Good Book Guide Review. Readers of Raymond Khoury know that there will not be anything radically different in his long series of novels, but they can be guaranteed a total reliability. The setting is Russia in the early 1900s with the Tsar and Tsarina under the spell of the always-present illiterate peasant Rasputin. What is the hold that the monk has over the royal couple? It’s a power people would kill for. In present-day New York, the faceless killer known only as ‘The Deathless’ (from an old Russian folk tale) has FBI agent Sean Reilly on his trail. What is the connection to events in Russia’s past?

Synopsis

Rasputin's Shadow by Raymond Khoury

On a cold, bleak day in 1916, a mining pit in Siberia turns into a bloodbath when its miners attack each other, savagely and ferociously. Minutes later, two men - a horrified scientist and Grigory Rasputin, trusted confidant of the tsar - hit a detonator, blowing up the mine to conceal all evidence of the carnage. In the present day, FBI agent Sean Reilly is tasked with a new, disturbing case. A Russian embassy attache seems to have committed suicide by jumping out of a fourth-floor window in Queens. The apartment's owners, a retired high school teacher and his wife, have gone missing, while a faceless killer is roaming New York City, leaving a trail of death in his wake. Joined by Russian FSB agent Larisa Tchoumitcheva, Reilly's investigation into the old man's identity will uncover a deadly search for a mysterious device whose origins reach back in time to the darkest days of the Cold War and to Imperial Russia and which, in the wrong hands, could have a devastating impact on the modern world.

My favourite thing about is the 'like for like' page this has really introduced me to some good reads! That and lots of honest reviews.

Sam Lewis

The books for review are always great reads, brilliantly written, and introduces me to a huge variety of, established and new, authors.

Lesley Hart

Lovereading is not only an amazing site, but it's one of my very favourites. It's like visiting a fascinating bookstore, but better.

Rebecca Jayne Barrett

A well laid out site, I love the fact that is separates paranormal fiction from fantasy and horror, which other sites don't.

Jen Rainbow

I read new, exciting writers and established authors before publication and there is a great website full of brilliant books and opinions.

Lynda

It's the first site that I visit when deciding on the next set of books to buy. A particular treat is being able to download an extract.

Tessa Olson

If you LOVE reading then you will love LOVEREADING! It's a 'novel' idea. Seriously though I could not recommend them enough.
