Reviewed and selected by our poetry expert, Liam Parkin.

God’s Gift to Women was the first of two of Don Paterson’s collections to win the T.S. Eliot Prize. The ironic title alone indicates Paterson’s exploration of sexuality, lust and women. Indeed, the collection centres on human relationships in a variety of ways, whether it be the ineffable nature of love, the interchange of power, or the man accidentally filming himself masturbating to his friends (Postmodern). Paterson’s humour runs throughout the collection, but in no way undermines his delicate imagery of ‘all the clockwork of the heavens, [and] words suddenly free in the air’ (12:00: Dronley). His distinctive colloquial voice leads the diction, often written in the Scottish dialect, giving the collection a semi-autobiographical feel; and his diversity of form is merely a sample of his poetic expertise. Paterson creates a deeply probing set of poetry full of sincerity, humour and intellect, and is one of the finest poets we have the pleasure of reading.
