Sarah Broadhurst's view...

July 2009 Book of the Month.

Having taken the teenage market by storm this clever girl turns from vampires to alien possession for her first remarkable adult novel. The alien ‘worms’ should completely take over the ‘host’, mind and body, but something has gone wrong, and now two consciousnesses share the same flesh. It is a truly creepy idea, very well realised. The aliens want to find the rebel encampment, the human host to protect it. This leads to a war of wills within the same mind. Also, both beings have fallen for the same man, adding to the tension and confusion of a quite superb novel. I really have never read anything quite like it; atmospheric, turbulent and extremely good.

Comparison: Greg Bear (Blood Music), Elizabeth Kostova (The Historian), Laurell K Hamilton.

If you like Stephenie Meyer you might also like to read books by Charlaine Harris, Jennifer Rardin and Rachel Caine.

Synopsis

The Host by Stephenie Meyer

Melanie Stryder refuses to fade away. The earth has been invaded by a species that takes over the minds of their human hosts while leaving their bodies intact, and most of humanity has succumbed.

Wanderer, the invading ‘soul’ who has been given Melanie’s body, knew about the challenges of living inside a human: the overwhelming emotions, the too-vivid memories. But there was one difficulty Wanderer didn’t expect: the former tenant of her body refusing to relinquish possession of her mind.

Melanie fills Wanderer’s thoughts with visions of the man Melanie loves - Jared, a human who still lives in hiding. Unable to separate herself from her body’s desires, Wanderer yearns for a man she’s never met. As outside forces make Wanderer and Melanie unwilling allies, they set off to search for the man they both love.

Reviews

Stephenie Meyer is an amazing phenomenon-out of the brightness of her mind and spirit comes the illuminated darkness of her stories. For no matter how much pain her characters suffer, Meyer infuses the tales with light and hope.
Orson Scott Card, author of The Ender Saga

* 'A fascinating, passionate, and unique psychological thriller. In The Host, Stephenie Meyer gives a new and surprising meaning to the phrase `being of two minds!'
