LoveReading Says

I must confess I am a little bit obsessed with the anthologies by Batsford Books. Their collection of poetry anthologies is absolutely stunning, offering wisdom, laughs, solace, inspiration, and everything in between, for every day of the year. My favourite: A Poem To Read Aloud Every Day of the Year is well loved, well thumbed, and the perfect dip in dip out bundle of joy for any poetry lover.

So you can imagine my excitement when I saw their new addition to the collection: Shakespeare for Every Night of the Year. The Bard is the most studied writer in the history of western civilisation, no other author has had such an impact on the cultural life of the world. He has been called the greatest University of all. In little over 20 years he wrote 38 plays, 154 love sonnets and two epic narrative poems. Even if you haven't studied one of his plays or read one of his sonnets, you probably quote his words without even realising, so embedded they are in the English language.

Straight from the pen of the Bard himself, Colin Salter has edited a fabulous collection of Shakespeare's work. As Dramatist Ben Jonson said of Shakespeare: "He was not of an age, but for all time." and whilst that was incredibly prescient of him, he might be surprised that we are still extolling their virtues 400 years after they were written.

Beautifully illustrated by Daniel Svinvai with favourite scenes from Shakespeare's best-loved plays, this is a celebration of Shakespeare, a dazzling collection of his weighty words, words which so powerfully portray the human condition. Our vices and virtues. Of life, love, death, revenge, grief, jealousy, murder, magic and mystery. It includes extracts from plays, sonnets, verses from poems, complemented by daily anniversaries as prompts. Whether you're a huge fan of his work, or wanting to learn more about the Bard, this is a wonderful collection to immerse yourself in all year round. What better way to end each day?
