Barefoot offers an interesting insight into the world of surfing culture, giving valuable insight into its history as well as its modern day ethos. Combined with this and the spiritualism the author connects to surfing we also follow him around the world through his career as a dancer and a choreographer. I was swept into this book and Andrew’s story, finding it entertaining and poignant. Having learning to surf on my bucket list I feel that this book has given me a much deeper insight into surfing culture as well as introducing me to the terminology and etiquette.
I feel that this memoir offers something for a wide variety of readers. It shares an interesting life that features the hustle and bustle of New York city and a career in the arts, travel and experiences living all over the world and moments of grounding and calm reflection that comes from finding your place in the world.
