An entirely captivating and thrilling read set within the heart of the Roman Empire in AD323. This is the fifth Twilight of Empire novel and a must read for historical adventure seekers. I will admit to this being my first foray into the series, yet immediately felt at home and I feel this could easily read as a standalone. Honourable military commander Aurelius Castus finds himself in the middle of a power play between the emperor and his son. Ian Ross sets the scene beautifully, in fact the first sentence screamed with impact, snaring my attention, and the pages didn’t let me go until I had turned the very last one. I was by the side of Castus as he balanced on a knife edge between two of the most powerful men in his world, and I fought by his side in the bloodiest of battles, both large and small. The author’s note explains the history behind this tale, and the blend of fact and fiction has created an absolutely cracking read. Imperial Vengeance is a swiftly moving adventure into the past, one that feels so authentically real it takes you there… now do excuse me while I nip out to get the first four in the series. ~ Liz Robinson

If you like Ian Ross you might also like to read books by Harry Sidebottom, Anthony Riches and Ben Kane.

Imperial Vengeance by Ian Ross

The fifth novel in the Twilight of Empire series sees Aurelius Castus caught between loyalty to the Emperor Constantine and the plotting of his son. Aurelius Castus is one of the leading military commanders of an empire riven by civil war, but age is telling upon him. As the emperor Constantine grows ever more ruthless in his pursuit of power, Castus fears that the world he knows is slipping away. On the eve of the war's final campaign, Castus discovers that the emperor's son Crispus aims to depose his father and restore the old ways of Rome. As the armies march, Castus knows that the conflict ahead will be the fiercest he has ever known. With a sadistic torturer on his trail, Castus must choose between honour and survival, and face a final confrontation with the most powerful man in the Roman world, the ruler he has sworn loyally to serve: the emperor Constantine himself.

'A corking story, thoroughly exciting and with some of the best fighting sequences I've read' For Winter Nights.

'With plenty of intrigue and bloody action, this is historical fiction at its rollicking best'
Sunday Sport.

'This tense, immersive novel is [...] the best of a fine series' Sunday Express

'Hugely enjoyable. The author winds up tension into an explosion of fast-paced events'
Conn Iggulden

'Ian Ross blazes in the world of Empire and legions ... This is up there with Harry Sidebottom and Ben Kane' M.C. Scott

About the Author

Ian Ross

Ian Ross was born in England and studied painting before turning to writing fiction. He has travelled widely and worked as a bookseller, tutor and university lecturer while developing his writing abilities. A year in Italy teaching English and exploring the ruins of empire reawakened his early love for ancient history, and he returned to the UK with growing fascination for the period known as late antiquity. He has been researching and writing about the later Roman world and its army for over a decade, and his interests combine an obsessive regard for accuracy and detail with a devotion to the craft of storytelling. He lives in Bath, keeps unsociable hours and has never owned a television or a car.
