Warm, witty and endearingly entertaining, fans of Rumpole of the Bailey will relish this romp through the trials and tribulations of a Bermondsey based Resident Judge.

At a little over sixty, Charlie Walden has taken up the position of Resident Judge of Bermondsey Crown Court. In Charlie’s words, the RJs main role is “to be the person to blame whenever something goes wrong”, by which he means – specifically – when nit-picking civil servants known as ‘the Grey Smoothies’ deem the court’s work to be less than efficient. Their humourless commitment to bean-counting bureaucracy saps much of Charlie’s time and energy (“the court staff and I could easily spend almost every hour of our days buggering about with this nonsense”) as he stoically endeavors to get on with his actual job of trying criminal cases. This brilliantly observed novel has much to engage and amuse fans of behind-the-scenes courtroom dramas and, with this, the author (himself a former judge) has added another string to his already varied bow.
