Lovereading view...

This is beautiful novel seen through the eyes of an eleven year old. We follow him as he struggles to comprehend the love and hate that exists in his small town of Sunnyside. His mother is in jail for shooting and killing his father, she has entrusted his care to an elderly African American called Lacy, against the wishes of Charlieâs prejudice grandfather, and all the while the question of who actually did kill Charlieâs father hangs over them. Reminiscent of To Kill A Mockingbird, this debut novel is an absolute gem. Charles Davis is an author to keep an eye on.

Synopsis

Angel's Rest by Charles Davis

"The mountain always looked dark, but the older I got that year, the darker it got."

It is 1967 and eleven-year-old Charlie York lives in Angel's Rest, deep in the Virginia mountains. His town is a poor boy's paradise - until a shotgun blast kills Charlie's father and puts his mother on trial for murder.

When reclusive Korean War veteran Hollis Thrasher is also linked to the death, Charlie embarks on a dangerous midnight journey so that the truth about what he witnessed that fateful day can finally be revealed.

Reminiscent of To Kill a Mockingbird and Stand by Me, Angel's Rest is an unforgettable novel about a mother's love, a hero's return and a boy who discovers angels do exist.

Reviews

"Charles Davis has spun a glorious mountain tale of love, hope and redemption. Charlie York is a true original, an 11-year-old wonder who handles loss with grace, angels with humour and life with a defiant spirit." - Adriana Trigiani
