LoveReading View on The River at Night

July 2017 Book of the Month.

Four middle-aged women and long-time friends with a checkered history embark for their yearly reunion meeting on a whitewater rafting expedition down the Allagash river in Maine where, inevitably, their heavy-laden past comes rearing its ugly head and the journey turns into an inevitable nightmare at times reminiscent of Deliverance but without the ferocious hillbilly nature of its setting. Both a tale of friendship and the ties that bind and a wilderness thriller where nature and its dark if beautiful side becomes as much a character as the varied female protagonists. Fast-paced, suspenseful and travels the gamut of life experiences as the friends' back stories and characters are unveiled as perils aplenty present themselves and the narrative races towards a splendid climax. Good stuff. ~ Maxim Jakubowski

The River at Night Synopsis

Raw, relentless and heart-poundingly real, this book knocked me off my feet like a river in flood' Ruth Ware, bestselling author of In a Dark, Dark Wood and The Woman in Cabin 10 'A thought came to me that I couldn't force away: What we are wearing is how we'll be identified out in the wilderness.' Win Allen doesn't want an adventure. After a miserable divorce and the death of her beloved brother, she just wants to spend some time with her three best friends, far away from her soul-crushing job. But athletic, energetic Pia has other plans. Plans for an adrenaline-raising, breath-taking, white-water rafting trip in the Maine wilderness. Five thousand square miles of remote countryside. Just mountains, rivers and fresh air. No phone coverage. No people. No help...

Closing date: 09/11/2018

To celebrate the paperback release of the "simply superb" Come and Find Me, we have the opportunity to win a copy of the book with bookplates SIGNED by author Sarah Hilary. The competition will close on Friday 9 November with winners being notified by Friday 16 November.  "Simply superb, Come and Find Me is one hell of a clever, twisting, powerful story. This series is one of my favourites and DI Marnie Rome returns here in splendid style ... Sarah Hilary has the ability to take you into the words, to actually feel, to experience, and she sent my thoughts worming and writhing. At one point I found myself so exasperated and frustrated with one of the characters, it came as a shock when I came up for air and realised where I was. The ending buffeted me, surprised me, emotionally affected me, and a certain someone is still creeping around inside my mind. I already know that Come and Find Me will be one of my favourite reads of the year, and I think this is Sarah Hilary’s best yet, I simply can’t recommend this series highly enough." - Liz Robinson, Editorial Expert To have a chance of winning this fantastic prize, click the button below. The River at Night Press Reviews

'Raw, relentless and heart-poundingly real, this book knocked me off my feet like a river in flood' Ruth Ware, bestselling author of In a Dark, Dark Wood and The Woman in Cabin 10

'I've reached my limits with novels where the plot seems to focus on murdered women and/or children ... I'm more excited about the new wave of crime novels that are as much about location as they are about gruesome deeds. The River At Night, set during a women-only, white water rafting trip in the Maine wilderness, out in January ... is where the thriller is heading, I reckon Red Ferencik really gets under the skin of her characters, and brings depth to the horrors that await them on the river' Big Issue

'Author Erica Ferencik's storytelling [is] ... brutally effective ... hurtling River's harrowing narrative along in a visceral, white-knuckle rush' Entertainment Weekly

'With The River at Night, Erica Ferencik has created a surging and compulsively readable all-female nature thriller' Sydney Morning Herald

'A visceral and pulse-pounding thrill ride of a novel, beautifully crafted with stunning descriptive writing that left me pining for the Maine wilderness in all its perilous beauty' Chris Ewan, no.1 bestselling author of Safe House

'A fantastic book ... A brutal, tender story' T. R. Richmond, author of What She Left
